Starting issue ?

Post by BenMMellor »

Hope someone can shed some light on a little 'niggle' for me.

Should the 16v just start happily and idle without the need to use the accelerator or not. I have to give it some juice to get the engine to catch and keep going.. I

t could be a near crapped out battery but the engine doesn't seem to just catch and run unless it gets some assistance. Once it's warm it's idling fine, though if I kill the ignition and then restart it still needs help to start up again...

Is this a known issue - maybe time to use the RAC warranty supplied with the car.

I noticed posts about using carb cleaner so if my K&N panel filter ever turns up from YBFilters (Ebay) then I'll give that a go.

Maybe I'm just used to Japanese technology...

Thanks !

Can't really point to something specific I'm afraid. You could check the basics though; i.e. the plugs/plug leads, TB, airfilter, etc. Perhaps have the fault codes checked?

depending on the mileage of the car it may need de-coking. Try some 10K Boost from Halfords

sometimes the throttle body gets coked up and needs cleaned its only 4 allen bolts to take it off but after cleaning youll need to reset the basic settings so youll need someone with a VAG diagnostic machine.have a look with the air filter off and open the butterfly see if it dirty.
temp switches are quite common too!!! :)

Thanks to all for the advice. I actually spoke to the VW Specialist place who have done all the recent services yesterday. They advised the same things.

I'll give it a go this weeked if I get chance. Just got to get to 'Hellfords' to get some carb cleaner or 10K boost.

It's got 51k on the clock. I think the good long run on tuesday gave it a bit of a clear out - but I think there may be a little bit of crap in the system as when i was giving it a good stretch, it'd hit 4k rpm in 2nd and almost like a stall/judder occurred with the engine and then it would pick up again, change upto 3rd hit about 4.5K rpm and the same judder again...

seems to be getting a little more frequent in it's stuttering - happening at different rev points now.

Just a bit wary of using 10k Boost or a carb cleaner in case I make more of a problem.... still nothing ventured nothing gained.. the warranty is good for £500 claims at a time..

give the filter a good clean (air) and lots of carb cleaner in the inlet. should help - won't harm.
