Smell of fumes in car?
Smell of fumes in car?
ok, i recently fitted an aftermarket air filter. I took off the air box, then fitted the air filter to throttle body. But i was left with the breather hose! I'm not sure what to do with this hose to stop petrol fumes entering the cabin. Can anyone help? getting rather fed up of chocking now!!! lol
Re: Smell of fumes in car?
use a breather filter if the aftermarket filter is connected directly to the throttle body. It should reduce the fumes hopefully
Re: Smell of fumes in car?
ok thanks mate.
Re: Smell of fumes in car?
BTW mate do you hear a funny trumpet noise from the throttle body? because after I removed the air box and fitted an aftermarket filter as I pressed the throttle it made this annoying noise
!!!!!!!!! had to put the air box back on!!
Re: Smell of fumes in car?
no it didn't mate. could have been that the air filter wasn't tightly fitted.
Re: Smell of fumes in car?
nahh it's surely something from the throttle body because even without filter it did the same annoying noise
!! tks any way mate

Re: Smell of fumes in car?
Slightly old topic now, but I'm a little concerned over our 6N2.
The wife says it's in my head but I can swear that I sometimes get a whif of fumes from the car. It drives perfect, very responsive etc I don't think I can hear a leaky exhaust either. The pollen filter was done a few weeks back, along with a full major service.
I've also had the clutch and timing belts done only last week. My garage tell me the car is perfect really.
Is there a known problem with these cars (1.4 16v SE [AHW engine] ) ?? Is there perhaps a breather pipe that might be clogged or another filter that i've missed?
Any help would be appreciated. I have a 9 month old son and this car is for the mrs to use for nursery and shopping journeys etc.
Cheers in advance.

Re: Smell of fumes in car?
make sure the crank case breather hose is properly connected to the air box or that it is not cracked. maybe they left it disconnected after the service. when mine was left disconnected I could actually sometimes smell fumes inside the car

Re: Smell of fumes in car?
Hi - thanks for that, I'll check it. Any other possibilities?
The smell itself isn't an exhaust type smell, it's more like burnt oil - a bit like the smell you get from breather pipes, not exhaust pipes, so that could be it really.

Re: Smell of fumes in car?
Fixed this problem tonight too. It seems there were a couple of screws missing from the airbox which seemed to be causing a slight escape of fumes from inside the airbox (on the AHW the throttle butterfly also sits in the airbox and the breathers connect to it too)..
Replaced the missing screws and the problem seems to have been cured
