What oil?

Post by ianmt »

Hi all.

I have a 2006 1.4 100bhp 16v Polo that needs topping up on engine oil. The technical info does not specify what oil to get so can anyone help please? I have found on this forum that people have been using 5w 40 and 10w 40, but that is for the gti.

I have also found this, http://www.opieoils.co.uk/product-finde ... der-2.aspx.

I am rather confused, which oil do I need?

Thanks in advance.
:D

I have some "luxury" castrol edge 0w 30 left over from when I had my Civic Type R, would this be ok to top up with?

I'll also look forward to an answer for this! I've a polo E 2006 55ps but I'm sure I can use the same oil as you.

I thought it could be any engine oil. :S

I'd reckon that you have a choice of two oils, one if you are "running" fixed servicing, ie 10,000MLS/12MTHS and another if you are running "flexible or long" servicing - ie the car works out when its due oil change by how it is being used.

I'd avoid using 10w-40 though, for fixed servicing stick with something like Fuchs Titan SL 5W-40 fully syn - for flexible servicing - an oil that is listed for that!

Edit, curious that opie oils list 5w-30 for most cars? Maybe from a supplier point of view it makes it easier to rationalise stock holding - though for most user though it will not make any differance, and VAG are tending to move to that "weight" of oil as time goes on (probably for the same reason), but my Passat 2.8, when it was sold quoted 10w-40 - and so did my wife's 2003MY Polo 1.4SE 16V (75PS) - but that site now lists 5w-30 for both of them.

The main thing is not to add non-syn oil into one filled with syn - so play safe and only use fully syn oil, also do use "long service" oils if your car is on flexible servicing.

Problem being then is what oil did they put in for the service ( I guess I could always pop to the dealer and ask what oil they put in) so I don't mix it up?
