Right have a 07 GTI which I have only owned for 2 Months!
Recently the coolent temperature warning light has decided to pop on and off occasionally.
It came on last week when I was exiting a multistorey car park, so decided to stop and check
the coolant level in the reservior but the level seemed fine. So kept the ignition off
for a minute or two and then started the car back and the warning light had gone.
So the light didn't return untill the last two days there. Also the light came on while I was
leaving for work yesterday and this morning so the engine wasn't warm either
Although the car is under warranty I have the option to take it back to steelers but I want to be
certain so that they cant turn me away.
Anyhow from the manual, it suggests it could be one of the following issues
1. The radiator fan fuse (which I cant find?!?!)
2. The coolant Overheating
3. A low coolant level (topped up this morning just incase).
I tried using the Fleebay VAG COM cable (OBD-II) using VCD LITE but the cable doesn't seem to be compatible something about CANBUS?!?!
Which suggests it may not work in my GTI.
Also the car is not overheating well by looking at the gauge, the needle stays at the top/middle.
So just looking for few advice what to do? Is this common in GTI's?
Coolant Warning Light - 9n3 GTI
Re: Coolant Warning Light - 9n3 GTI
I've had this problem with mine!!! Normally happens about 10 seconds after i've just turned engine on in the morning!!!
I checked the coolant level and noticed that had dropped just below minimum!!!
Went to dealers and they just sold me some G12 coolant and said top it up! If it comes on again in next couple of months bring it in!!! So i topped mine up and its been alright for like 7months but then last week it started happening again! Checked level and it had dropped just below minimum again! Topped up with G12 i had left and all is fine once more!!!
I think there may just be a very small leak in the system so every few months it needs topping up! Also think not all the coolant runs back to the reservoir bottle all the time which means next time you start it up, sensor is picking up a low coolant level so light comes on!!!
If your cars still in warranty, i'd suggest taking it to them and ask them to investigate. Never know what they might find!!

OMG I checked my coolant level today after the run and it was below the min level like yours lol
As you said looks to me it could be a leak in the system. Although I had some G12 spare lying in my garage so topped it up anyhow. If the
light come back within the next week or two then I'd probably be taking it back to dealers. I want to eliminate all the possible problems before I go
to the dealers just incase they try to fool me and turn me away.
Can it also be the coolant sender sensor??? But I guess only way to find out is through VAG-COM
Is there a different VAGCOM cable for the GTI's or cars with CANBUS???? ATM I am trying to use a OBD-II using Ross Tech VCD Lite
Re: Coolant Warning Light - 9n3 GTI
No problem, happy to help.
Doubt it would be anything to do with the sensor as if thats coming on when coolant is low, then it is working correctly.
Can't help you regards the diagnostic equipment as i've got no experience with that!!
