Failed Ignition Coil

Post by alanred »

polo 9n 1.2 AWY
The cars done 70,707.
I bought it second hand with 31,000 on it, at 34,000 one of the coil packs failed, the car came with vw assistance so they came and changed all 3, free of charge.
Today i think one of the packs has failed again !
The car sounds and feels like it's running on 2 pots and there is a strong smell of unburnt fuel from the exhaust.
This is what made me think its the coil packs again......But, there is no warning light on the dash at all.
I thought maybe a loose wire so had a look and poke around but can't see anything obvious.

It's not driveable at all.

Was just wondering if anyone here has experienced anything similar ?

Thanks
Johan

well this happened to me at about 76k, and I found I needed to change both the coil packs and the spark plugs?
agree that the car wasn't drivable and running like a 2 pot..but didn't experience the exhaust smells.
apparently the coils are a common problem(?)
but yeah, hope that's some help :S ha.

I had a coil pack go on me too, was also told it was a common problem. Worn spark plugs will increase the liklihood of a coil going to make sure you check you're spark plugs (unless the ones from VW are still good)
