Not another Coilover question!
Not another Coilover question!
Hi,
Aside from small mods and audio, my car is pretty much stock.
Im on the look out for alloys and coilovers.
For alloys im looking at 14-15" TH Monos or very similar (any ideas? please help!) (£250-£300)
As for coilvers i know there are a few brands out there.
Im not after expensive ones just ones that aren't going to breakdown.
Ive come across, HotTuning, Jamex, FK AK, JOM and these... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Coilover-Suspensi ... 112wt_1139
Out of the Coilovers their all roughly around the same price.
What ones would you choose and why?

Re: Not another Coilover question!
I would probably either go for the FK or JOM coilovers simply because loads of people on here have got them and seem happy with the quality.
They all do the same job essentially it’s just some of the cheaper coilovers are produced from cheaper materials and are therefore more prone to ceasing (corrosion can also be a problem). The fixed damping settings are the same as some of the high quality brands like Weitec & AP so the ride quality should be ok.
I wouldn’t think about it too much because the brands you have listed are all essentially the same, bar the colour.
As for the Alloys I would go for the 15" Mono's simply because they look better visually.
14"s can look smart but you need to get it slammed to achieve a good look with small wheels.

Cheers mate,
I appreciate it!
Now, would you go for alloys first or coilys?

Re: Not another Coilover question!
No problem at all mate
I went for wheels first and then got Coilovers fitted several months later but If I had the choice again I would do it the other way round.
New Wheels look great but when their sitting on the standard Polo suspension set-up you tend to notice the ride height even more and it becomes very irritating. The only good thing about putting new wheels on first is that it will make you want Coilovers even more.
I reckon your best bet is to get the Coilovers first, get the car lowered and sitting at your desired ride height and then start saving for some new wheels.
Some people might think it’s better to do it the other way round but if I had the choice again it would certainly be Coilovers first.
It’s a tough one mate, both are expensive items but make the world of difference visually.

Cheers,
One more question,
Regarding purchasing and installing coilovers is there any thing else that i need to replace older parts?
Or can i just use the parts all ready installed on the car?

You wont have to purchase anything else other than the coilovers, some of the washers used on the existing suspension may need to be used though,
It all depends what the kit that you buy includes. I bought a Spax kit from Venom and that included everything apart from a few rod spacers which I used from the original suspension.
You probably will need the wheels aligned mate, the tracking will certainly be out and there is a good chance you will be running some negative camber.5509433 wrote:sorry another, lol,

When you fit the coilies just try to get them straight as possible, its difficult doing it by yourself but if you have a got a mate there helping its easier to get the alignment right. Best bet is to get them fitted and then take it to a garage for a full 4 wheel laser alignment & tracking.
You want the alignment and tracking to be crack on because otherwise you will be getting through sets of tyres within weeks.
Re: Not another Coilover question!
Get some JOM's FTW
Re: Not another Coilover question!
Ok guys cheers.
Just looking at my current 13" steel set up (i believe that standards are 13"?)
I was thinking i should probably go for 16" rims.
Im not one to want to hug the ground, ad i want it to be practical.
I like it when cars are lowered to the point where the wheels fit nicely around the arches, and not in them.
Im also after a stretch on the tires.

Re: Not another Coilover question!
16" rims look great on a 6N2 in my opinion, I always thought my 15"s looked just slightly too small so I bought myself some 16" BBS RXII's.
I agree also reference the balance between arches & wheels, i'm not to keen on the 'Slammed' look and it wouldnt be practical where I live.
Have you got any particular wheels in mind?

Re: Not another Coilover question!
Currently i dont have that much money to play with so selcetion of alloys are very slim.
Hence why im not sure what to go for first.
The alloys i have been looking at are
TH Monos and G60s. Ive been looking at others but they are too exspensive.
Im after a decent rim with stetched tires, not too stretched but one that is noticeable.
I want the alloy to fit nicely in the arch, so im nit sure to go with a larger rim and a low profile tire, or a smaller rim with a larger sidewall.
Thanks

Re: Not another Coilover question!
G60's would be a good option because they look smart and are very cheap.
They are only available in 15" inch though so be aware of that. As far as tyre stretch goes you could run either 175/45/R15'S or 175/50/R15's which would give you a nice noticeable stretch, alternatively you could go for 165/45's but that is quite a large stretch.
Its all personal preference, I am not massive fan of tyre stretch so just stick to 195's on both the G60's and RXII's but thats just me.
I always think larger rim with smaller tyre wall looks better than small rim & bigger tyre wall.
G60's - Running 195/45/R15's

RXII's - Running 195/40/R16's

Re: Not another Coilover question!
May seem a silly question, but do the G60s come with an air intake? (or what ever its called, the part where the pump attaches?)
In the pictures of the G60s that ive seen i cant see one?
Just trying to get the grand total.
