Standard GTI, or is it? LOL!
Standard GTI, or is it? LOL!
Does anyone know the measuring blocks in VAG-COM for 'requested boost'?
The reason I ask is I suspect our GTI isn't standard. It should be as it's the missus's car and she's not big on speed. We bought it from a main dealer with the understanding it wasn't 'chipped' or modified.
So imagine my surprise then when a MK1 TT (twin exhaust, 225hp model) couldn't pull away from me in a 60 - 110mph race. I had to back off as the missus was shouting at me, but it felt like it had more to go!
And on another occasion, with a dressing table in the boot, some twig in a Focus ST was tailgating me (which I hate) so I dropped it to 4th at 70mph and floored it. He struggled to get past, but did eventually.
I haven't dynoed it yet, but is there a way to see if the ECU has been revo'd or something?

Mine kept up with a focus ST nicely when it was standard.
you could call revo? but i suppose it could be mapped by anyone.

I'd get it on a dyno and see what it's putting out. You won't be able to tell using vagcom, etc. Although, some cars are built more equal than others
Maybe yours came with a few extra horses under the bonnet from the factory...

Also One of the guys on this forum had his standard GTI running at 165BHP
I havent raced ST's but dont have any trouble with Zetecs!
Re: Standard GTI, or is it? LOL!
Its easy to log with vag com.
Have a look at block 115, it gives you spec and actual boost.
remember that it's in milli-bars and starts at 1000mb which is the normal atmospheric pressure. on full throttle you should see the boost pressure rise to about 1600mb on stock, if its tuned around 2000 or over.
Personally, if you don't know who you are road-racing against, how hard they are trying or what condition their car is in, just be happy your car is going well.

I didn't read the first post properly about measuring blocks and in all honesty didn't even think about checking the blocks

Cool thanks, I'll check VAG-COM later.
Kept up with an Octavia VRS on Saturday too. They're 180ish hp aren't they?
I think ours must be around the 165-170hp mark then, which is good! Mind you, all the MK5 GTIs put out around 220ish hp standard too, so VAG are a bit on the conservative side with their power figures.
As for racing, I know full well when a car is being ragged. You can tell by it's 'body language' and the stench from the cats, or the strong hydrocarbons if it's decatted / grey smoke. The TT was definitely racing. He kept pulling into the left lane and flooring it to thwart my overtaking attempts, but he couldn't pull away by much at all. I don't make a habit of racing, but it's nice to know what the car can match out there

Marco! mate reading to this makes me confident of my GTIMarcoPolo wrote:Cool thanks, I'll check VAG-COM later.

Nice one keep us updated of all the fast saloons u have kept up with?
Re: Standard GTI, or is it? LOL!
Will do
I use my Corrado more for road racing but the little Polo does well for what it is
Boost is hitting 1550-1610mbar (8psi), so it's 100% standard
Next time I go to Stealth I'll see what it puts down on the dyno.

Re: Standard GTI, or is it? LOL!
i don't need vagcom to tell you that youre car is 100% standard...
if it was remapped you should be able to drive circles around a focus ST, TT225 etc.
my GTI has standard 161Hp and 250nM torque, i guess all GTI's have around those figures.(not sure)
Skoda octavia VRS, depends on model, has 200Hp (later models)
same TFSi engine as Golf V - VI GTI.
stock polo should be able to beat a Golf V or VI GTI, so you won't have much trouble with a VRS,
they are much heavier as a Golf
don't underestimate a Polo GTI

A stock Polo GTI won’t beat a Golf GTI MK5/6 that's a Fact!Turbomier wrote:i don't need vagcom to tell you that youre car is 100% standard...

The Golf will pull away comfortably if it's being driven properly, I'm not saying the Polo will get annihilated because it won’t but the Golf is the faster car both acceleration wise and top end. My 6N2 GTI can easily keep up with a Stock 9N3 GTI and that doesn’t even have a turbo
I have been blitzed by Scirocco 2.0 TSI & Golf MK5 GTI (both stock) so don’t try and say the Polo will beat them because it’s laughable.
I love Polo's but you need to be more realistic, a re-mapped Polo GTI is a different story and I won’t argue against what they are capable of.

Have you seen turbomiers videos hes posted? Proves a standard polo can do alot more than people think, have alook at his progress thread
and comparing a standard 6n2 gti to a 9n3 gti is miles off. I have had both, i stepped out of the 6n2 straight to the 9n3 and its a completly different story. the difference is incomparible

Re: Standard GTI, or is it? LOL!
I am not doubting the 9N3 GTI is a quick car as standard because it is, i'm just saying its not as quick as many of its rivals including the Ibiza & Leon Cupra's, Golf MK5/6 GTI's, Audi TT, S3 and several others. VW under powered the Polo for a reason and that was to prevent it from being just as quick as the more expensive Golf, hence the reason its only the Cup GTI's that run 180BHP.

Understood, the only couple i dont agree with really are the ibiza and the mk5 golfs. some of those are painfully slow and the ibiza is pretty much a polo but uglier.
when my car had standard map i had no problems taking part in a straight line drag race with the focus st (new one), i didnt beat it but it was even stevens all the way which i find incredible that the little polo with almost half the power can keep up.
for me thats what a hot hatch is about, being quicker and more nimble than the bigger boys that have spent double the money.
for me the polo gti is the new mk1 golf gti, small fun and fast!

Re: Standard GTI, or is it? LOL!
I agree completely Chris,
I must admit I do like the older Ibiza's MK3 Cupra's in particular but the later models are pretty hideous and we all know SEATS are just a poormans Volkswagen.
I have heard the the GTI can be mapped to 210-215bhp from standard is that correct? obviously no weight gain so it must be pretty impressive with a stage 1 or 2 map.
How do they fare against the Type R's & Clio 182's/197's?
I dont think the Polo will ever have the cult following of the MK1 Golf GTI but its certainly a hot hatch.
The New GTI looks even more impressive, apart from the 18K price tag
