Loss of power since replacement coil?
Loss of power since replacement coil?
Hi guys.
We were traveling to Mid Wales on Monday when our 2006 1.4, 100bhp started stuttering. After about a minute, the engine management light came on and we had to pull over. I called VW assistance and the RAC guy came out and diagnosed the car as a misfire and coil number 2 was gone. He replaced the coil but had to call through to check that the one he had on the van was compatible-it was a genuine vag part.
After traveling back the car was fine, but since the coil has gone and been replaced I've noticed that the car doesn't "pull" as hard as it did before? It also seems more slugish when you lift off in 1st.
We bought the car in Feb this year so all is covered and its going in to be diagnosed on Tues, but any ideas or if any of you had this issue before?
* The RAC guy initially pulled up the fault on the computer but didnt check if any fault codes were coming up after he fitted the new coil as the car was running ok.
Thanks in advance.

Did the RAC guy clear the fault?ianmt wrote:Hi guys.

Is the engine management light still on?
It maybe that the fault hasn't been cleared and therefore in limp mode?
Re: Loss of power since replacement coil?
Yer, the light has gone out now. I did wonder if it was running in limp mode though. Although normally that is cleared by turning the car off and on again?
It idles exactly the same as what it used to (just below 1000rpm). The pain in the ass is the fact that it appears as if its behaving like a turbo and you have to wait and then the power kicks in.
Not sure if he cleared the fault.

Re: Loss of power since replacement coil?
Something similar happened to my 1.4 last year - coil 2 exploded while I was on the M6, overtaking a line of trucks/coaches. It was pretty easy to diagnose the fault, as the top of the coil pack had literally been blown off, but the RAC bloke still had to clear the fault to get it started after fitting a new coil. It was still running rough though so he had to (in his words, 'reflash') the ECU to get it running properly again using his laptop. Don't really know what this process entails to be honest, or if that's even the right term to use when describing it, but I just assumed that it was a hard reset of the system. It sorted the car out though.9N3 Turbo wrote:It maybe that the fault hasn't been cleared and therefore in limp mode?
Maybe a similar process needs to be done on yours as well?
Hope this helps mate.
Re: Loss of power since replacement coil?
Thanks. That kind of makes sense. The RAC guy only used the computer to diagnose and must of cleared the fault but as I said, as the car sounded ok, he unplugged the computer and went on his way.
I only really noticed the difference when I was going up a hill and it was like driving my old Fiesta Mk2 1.1!!
I'll mention the reset of the ecu when I take the car to my VW dealer on Tues.

Re: Loss of power since replacement coil?
When you talk to the VW garage I'd leave out the word "re-flashed" as I don't think that the RAC guy would have the info or kit to do that if it was needed. I must say though, when I needed to replace a coil on my wife's BBY engine, it was just > scan faults to identify which coil it was > replace coil > clear all logged faults > car now okay, ie as it had been before the coil failed, though I did replace "like" with "like".
Re: Loss of power since replacement coil?
Yer thanks mate.
Although I have wondered as it wasn't the exact part maybe that is why there doesn't seem enough power as before. Its a genuine VAG part but the RAC guy had to ring through as he said he wasn't sure if it was "compatible'. They said it was ok but clearly isn't the direct replacement coil.
I'll get the box out of the car tommor and see if any of you know whether this may be the wrong part. When I booked the car in, the guy on the service desk said to make sure I left the old coil and box the RAC guy gave in the car, so maybe this is the case?

This is the part number for a new coil 06A905115D £32.84ianmt wrote:Yer thanks mate.

Re: Loss of power since replacement coil?
@ RUM4MO - Yeah I thought the same when the RAC guy said that was what he was doing, just thought I would mention it here in case it was some use. It took his laptop about 5-10 minutes max to complete whatever it was doing, and the car was fine after that. Any idea what this might have been then?
Re: Loss of power since replacement coil?
His computer def. didn't spend that amount of time when it was plugged in. Maybe it could be a combination of the wrong coil with the software?
I'll post up the actual part that he's given tommor. It will be interesting to see what they diagnose at the vw garage on tues!?

Re: Loss of power since replacement coil?
Right,
Just got the box from the car as Sinclair VW said they want me to leave the box and part with the RAC report in the car for Tues.
The part number he put was:-
036 905 715 F (its got a =A written by the side of it)
and not 06A905115D like 9N3Turbo posted.
Its also in a Volkswagen Group box.
Question being now is that is this the cause of the loss of power, and for future reference, if I was to keep a spare coil in the car, will 1 coil fit all 4, or do you have different coils for 1-4 (i.e kind of like with HT leads with not mixing them up)
Also just type the part number in google and this came up:-
http://www.deegeeinternational.co.uk/el ... ils_6.html
Now, from what I can tell, RAC have given DG-CE510 Pencil Coil and the one that should of been used was:- DG-CE450 Pencil Coil.
Maybe this is the cause?

Re: Loss of power since replacement coil?
Thats the same part number of the replacement coil I have. Gave my broken one to the guy in TPS and he gave me one with the part number you posted as a replacement. For reference, the original coil packs in my car are still part number 036 905 715 A. Sounds like its just an upgraded part to be honest. I haven't noticed any problems with mine.
The coil packs are the same for each cylinder.

Re: Loss of power since replacement coil?
Cool! thanks mate. Will see "whats occurin" on Tues at VW then.
Will pick up a spare once this is sorted then as you say "one fits all".
Cheers,

Re: Loss of power since replacement coil?
Car went in to vw garage today. They put a diagnostic on the car and its safe to say there are now no faults. However, they did mention that they couldn't see an issue with the loss of power.
This is the strange part. My wife went to drop the car off and it was the same, a bit laggy in lifting off. But when she picked it up she said it was nippy as hell and back to normal?
So what you reckon they did?
I asked the technician and he said maybe it just cleared itself out of limp mode as the car has only been used 3 times since the coil went.
Well, only time will tell now.

Re: Loss of power since replacement coil?
woooah!
I took the car out after being in at Sinclair VW today. Although they said they did nothing i'm sure they must of at least plugged it in on a computer and reset the codes. Its running 100 times better now (at idle speeds) and is at least twice as fast. I floored it on the duel carriageway by me and it brought back memories of my ep3 civic type r (which is 90bhp more!). Its like a new car. Hooray!
