Post by Dan_6n_Polo »

Got a 'new' engine.. Had someone ready to fit but now he has suddenly decided he doesnt want to do it. Anyone who lives in the guildford / aldershot / farnborough area please please please give me some advice! Even if u know someone who might do it for me, let me know!! Only this needs to be done then im back on the road!! :D

take it its the same engine going bk in? ie 1.4 8v to 1.4 8v? if so its pretty straight forward if your confident enough, id change the timing belt and water pump tho, just to be on the safe side. best way if your doing it in the street is to take the front bumper, radiator and crossmember etc out the way, you could take the engine and box out in 1 if you have 2 trolley jacks, if not id split the box from the engine, make it a bit easier if ur using 1 jack. best way to think is its just nuts and bolts lol whatever car whatever job lol

Yeah it is a straight 1.4 8v swap. Sounds relatively simple.. the bolts bit anyway. Is the timing belt and water pump easy to change? I don't feel so confident about that lol I'm just worried about stuff like power steering pump etc.. i wouldnt have a clue about bleeding it or whatever, thats assuming you need to do that.. I could be wrong??

if i was nearer your area i would have came and helped you but im up in glasgow im afraid, just finished swapped and old knackered 1.4 16v to a better lower mileage one, like said its mostly nuts and bolts just remembering where everything goes back on, thats the tough bit lol
few plugs you need to unclip and hoses from radiator aswell, quite simple but id keep a box and bag the nuts of what bits they came off, thats what ive learnt that i would do next time

good luck if you do try it yourself, also it teaches you more about your car, so if something does go wrong later on you can pinpoint certain areas to look at instead of constantly taking to garages etc ;)

any problems you come across, theres always someone on here to try and help you or send you in the right direction

anyway bit of an epic right up but again good luck :)

Thanks for the reply. Indeed it is a real shame that you are hundreds of miles away! I tried to sell the car, but as soon as people see the engine 'wobbling' more than usual and the blue smoke from the exhaust, they notice straight away. The scrappies round my way are useless, so i'm concerned about buying an engine off of eBay or something. I won't know the true condition of it, it could even have the same problem as the current engine, who knows. Just don't want to waste a lot of money to have a huge problem again!

get the engine from a seller tht gives you a 30 day gaurantee, although youll have to make sure you fire into it so you dont waste the thirty days... luckily i got mine off a mate whos quite truthful, only had 50k on it (apparently) and i had time to rebuild it using bits tht were better or reconditioned, like pulleys and belts etc

again good luck with it and let us kno how you get on :)
