Intermittant Fault- Engine Cut out 2000 Model 1.0

Ok, so i bought my car a few months back and a few weeks after purchasing it (second hand) The engine started to cut out after about a mile and a half down the road, there was no cough or anything just smoothly cut out, it would take a minute of rest to start up again and work. I took it to the local garage and he messed around with it a little cleaned the throttle body and said it was gunked up and it worked fine for a few weeks, then it started doing it again :@ i took it back and the mechanic said there was nothing else he could do for it, the problem has slightly changed now and sometimes cuts out when im idle and sometimes when im driving, then when i start the engine again the revs go up and down a little and then cut out, takes a minute or two of waiting for it to start again properly, although sometimes it starts again first time no problem. I took it to a VW garage and they said they couldn't communicate with my car and i'd need to buy a new ECU for about £300/400?!?!?! Thats after charging me for half a hours labour to tell me this.

It's really annoying and i cant seem to find any fixes on the internet, is this a common fault? The cars done around 47k and apart from that drives perfectly.

sounds like a faulty coil pack
