Check Engine Light...

Post by jisp2010 »

Can anyone help. I have a 1.4 16v X Reg Polo with 85K on it. I keep having the check engine light reset and after around 50-100 miles it comes back on, yet the car is performing just fine. The code says that the mixture is to lean exiting the cat, yet the exhaust emissions are fine.
Before I bought the car it had a new front pipe and cat fitted to it (I have the receipt). On trying to cure the fault I have fitted a new stainless steel Jetex exhaust system from the cat back (the old one was blowing and hanging off). It's had a new lambda sensor in the cat, new spark plugs, new air box (old one had huge crack in it) and a K & N Filter. I also run the car on Shell or Esso unleaded fuel, not that supermarket rubbish. I have taken the car to a VW dealer and they tell me the cat is faulty  , before I shell out for a new one, I wondered if anyone had any ideas that I could try. Thanks Justin

What are the fault codes that came up?

I'm not sure, as the garage did not tell me. Sorry :(

You really need to try get the fault codes somehow, as that is crucial to a proper diagnosis :P

It could be damaged wiring on the engine side of the lambda loom as these often get damaged by careless mechanics

Thanks. I will run it back up to my independent VW dealer and get him to tell me what the codes are and I will let you know.
