Guys is this normal?

Recently I have noticed, when I floor it at first with a bit of wheel spin I feel alot of judder from both the gearbox and wheels? I can understand wheel spin but
is the judder normal?

Happens when the traction control kicks in, turn ESP off and try it, it should just spin without the juddering

Either that, or mine is as broken as yours :(

Worst thing is the ESP was off :? but the road was wet. Although I must say last time I had the judder the ESP warning light did light up on the dash.
So i think the traction may be coming on when it detects wheel spin?!?!?

also depends on the surface you were on. try it on a nice flat fresh bit of tarmac and u should get a smooth squeel. yeeee haaa!

And you could also change the engine mounts :) They are very weak on the Polo

I feel embarrased but just to confirm is the ESP in the polo gti permanent? The reason I am asking is because in the snow the ESP wasn't helping me much and being me thinking I had turned the ESP on by pressing the switch on the dashboard but instead it says ESP OFF(orange). :?

Just not sure what the case with ESP in the GTI???? Just there Couldn't go up a icy road, there just wasnt any traction at all :( even with the button on (displayed off)

if ur struggleing for grip in the snow plant your foot down on the gas...........then purn esp off then plant ur foot again then you will see the differance

So the ESP is permanent in the GTI? All this time I was going about with the ESP off and thought the ESP was on..... :shock: :P

It's called tramping isn't it?
it's nothing to do with ESP... usually happens with front wheel drive with soft engine / gearbox mount I think...

On all VAG cars and probably other marques, the ESP function remains enabled - and only gets disabled if you press the ESP switch, though next time the engine is started the ESP will be again enabled.

To be honest, in my experience, ESP is not very handy for use over a longish drive over slippery surfaces as it does in "real" use, cycle the braking function ON/OFF to prevent overheating the brakes. One thing though, try to get a feel as to how it works in ice and/or snow as it will regulate the throttle which I discovered can leave you also backing off the throttle which with a petrol engine, at least, will usually mean that the engine will stall which grip is established - which means that you are back to square one! Winter tyres on the other hand will make a lot of differance to getting about in ice and snow - and that means both when moving off and braking.

ESP is not permenant did you try what i sugested? If you did then you should realise that can be turned off

I was waiting for your answer RUM4MO :D Yes I quite agree with you on this and the handbook/manual (booklet 3.2, Pg7-8) comfirms this.

According to the book, if the ESP warning light is lit up on the dash then it either mean its switched off or faulty and if the warning light flashes then the system is in corrective mode. The ESP can be switched off by the buttton provided as you'll know.

This explains why I was feeling the judder in my first post. The ESP warning light was flashing when I experienced a bit of wheel spin and then the judder started immediately.

Couple of days ago, when i wasnt able to go uphill with the ESP on, the car kept sliding to one side and I could feel the breaking from the rear. But when I switched off the ESP the wheel spin was noticable.

Also as RUM4MO said, tyres do make alot of difference and having very less thread on the front didnt help either going up that hill :oops:
