...Well I have a 1.4 16v MkV...(X reg) I had MKiv before with 1.4 8v - the latter was much better then the former...engine wise...tho with tweaking from advice here...it'll be much better.

Insurance for me was iro £300 f/c...but then I'm older

mpg, getting bout 35 ish.

Nice car, but without any tweaking to engine, it sucks...8v is much better.
Styling of MkV is spot on imo...

Tdi is a better buy imo...you'll get plenty of bang for bucks...but make sure you go for the 1.9 version...

I have a 1.4 SE, with every option they did more or less, its 16V rear discs etc.

Insurance Group 6 (Which is still categorised as low risk small car)

As a guide, my Group 1 cost about £279 to insure and Group 6 seems to be about £400 but they are not direct comparison because insurance is always a fiddle both the companies and the clients!

i have a 1.4 tdi as well.

it is quite quick but not earth shattering. 0-60 in about 11 but quick from 30 -70. not much in the way of standard cars can keep up.

commuting to work which is about 14 miles and i get 60+ mpg. roads are probably 50/50 split between 30mph and 60mph.

I've got a 1.4 16v and love it but I keep hearing that the 8v is better, why? :?

polo

i think the 16 v has torque low down and the 16 high up in the revs.
personally i think the 16 must be better due to the more power etc and rear discs!!

jon_polov i know this is going to break your heart but the best range i had was 550 miles on 1 tank. regulary get 500+ though. only if the missus drives it does it get less. carnt figure out why though as she drives it more sensibly, she actually brakes for corners and slows down at islands!!. crazy i know. but excessive use of the brakes is probably what keeps the mpg down

i can get about 320 to a tank but in the end of the day i prefer the petrol noise so i dont mind really. i just cant take the thought of a tractor under the bonnet!
