alarm/immobiliser questions

Post by davestokes »

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out whether my car has come with the factory alarm/immobiliser or an after-market one. I have a Hella VW key - two button, type HAA with what looks like a red LED inside - this LED is lit constantly. There is also a red LED that flashes on the door pin on the drivers side when the car is locked and there's another one on the factory stereo. I know the car has an alarm as I've tested it, but I have no idea whether the immobiliser works. From what I've read there's an RFID chip in the key that activates the immobiliser when in range? Is this right? Is there any way I can test the immobiliser without having a spare key?

Any help appreciated!

Cheers

If its a gti then its got a factory alarm/immobiliser. The led in the key shouldnt be lit all the time - thats a bit odd?

The led in the door is for the alarm. The led in the stereo is for the stereos security.

If the car starts, then the immobiliser is working.

In the key you have a little chip called a transponder, which is energized when you put the key into the ignition. The car checks the code on the key matches the immobiliser, and if it does, it allows the car to start.
