difficulty getting into 3rd gear, linkage or gearbox?

Hi guys

Driving my polo 6n2 1.4tdi a lot up and down the motorway, been having problems getting it into 3rd gear,

I can get into 3rd gear if i put the gear into second and then 3rd but if i switch from 5th to 3rd it wont go in,

It going to be expensive if i have to replace gearbox....fifth is also a bit stiffe

Let me know if its a linkage issue, the gearbox isnt making any sounds when i put it into gear so theres no cruncching of gears, i replaced gearbox oil last at 78,000 miles an the car has done 40,000 miles since then, when does it need to be changes

im no mecanic and i know someone will come along and give you the perfect answer but in the meantime i shall try and give a little hope and say, my first thought would be the linkage.
I say this just cose my GTI was getting really hard to go into 2nd gear. i took it into VW for a complete check over before my MOT and the chappy sed something about a linkage being loose and something or another hanging on by a thread and what not. so he sorted it out for me. and now all is good

ide say clutch or pedal box going, is your clutch pedal lower than your break pedal??

thanks for the reponse,

the 1st or 2nd gear is normally a linkage issue, when i took it to the dealers JCT 600, specialist wasnt sure what it was neither as 3rd gear doesnt normally go

Another Mechanic hinted it might be the synchro mesh?

Any other ideas will be helpful,

Dont really know about clutch being lower than brake pedal as they all seem to be level..?

It doesnt sound like linkage. If 1/2 4/5 select then it isnt a linkage issue.

Its possible its the synchro on the gearbox as this would prevent certain gears engaging properly

cheers for all the help, found out although there was a linkage siezed in gear 5, gearbox is gone,

Any help in getting a new one would be great

Currently have a 5sp manual gearbox for a vw polo diesel 1.4tdi

If any of you guys have one of these lying around and are able to give me one happy days, dont mind paying if need be lol, if you dont ask you dont get lol, If you guys know anywhere to get one from or whatever information that could be helpful that would be great,

Trying to save from spending a bomb on this, as cant afford to lol....

Get it rebuilt - the TDI boxes are hard to come by and have different ratios and internals to the petrol ones.
