1.0L Polo with AHB engine?

Post by toxica »

Not sure if anyone will be able to help me but thought it was worth a try.

Bought a 1997 VW Polo last week, it was a bargain price. It needed a new set of HT leads and a distributor cap but when I went to get the parts for it, I discovered they wouldn't fit so I took them back to the motor factors, they looked up my model again and told me they should be the right parts. Anyway, they told me where to look for the engine code on the car, I had just been assuming that because it was a 1 litre 1997 Polo that it would have the AER engine but when I looked at the engine code it actually says it's an AHB engine. I rang my local VW garage about parts but they seemed just as confused as me and they told me that AHB engines are only in VW Caddys. Now, I have done a lot of googling tonight and I have only be able to find one 1 litre AHB Polo engine which is for sale on ebay. I haven't been able to find anything else at all about this engine, I have found that the AHB engine was also used in the Polo Classic/Sedan but that was a diesel model (the same as the Caddy) but my car is a hatchback and a petrol engine!

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I am so confused. I realise someone could have put a different engine into the car but, it seems VW didn't even make a petrol AHB engine?

The engine code was on the engine block below the timing belt casing.
An AHB petrol engine does exist as there is one for sale on ebay now but they seem to be very rare!

Interesting...

Ill have to load up the workshop manual when I'm home and dig into this further

Take a look under the boot carpet (or sometimes in the front of the service book) to see if there is a sticker with the original spec of the car on. It shows the engine code, gearbox code and paintcode plus its options.
