Mystery petrol smell

Hi all. My wife used the car on two different occasions last week and on start up, there appears to be a strong smell of petrol coming into the cabin. It went once the car has warmed up. I tried to replicate the fault today but all was ok. No petrol leaking inside and no loss of fuel. I seem to think it may be the air filter as it is now due a device. It is a 2006 1.4 polo sport with 15k. Any suggestions? Thanks. E.
