For the glovebox light, you need:
Light: 1J0 947 301
Wiring Plug: 1J0 972 923
Repair Wire: 000 979 133
You might also need some extra cable to have enough length to get to a constant 12v source. Think it was about £20 for the parts.

If you remove the glovebox, there's a rectangular blanking plate on the side. You need to cut that out and then it's just a matter of connecting one of the wires to 12v and the other to ground. I used one of the constant 12v's and the earth in the stereo wiring loom for this. Then the light unit just clips into the hole in the glovebox.

Also enabled the auto lock and unlock with VAG-com, and in less interesting news I've replaced the boot carpets, boot trim panels and parcel shelf due to the previous owner choosing to fit a dog in the boot.

Funnily enough, I was just thinking about this the other day. I haven't done it yet but I need to do a lot of driving up and down the M1 this week - average speed camera hell! Would definitely be useful for that lol. What's actually involved in fitting it though? How much of the dash needs to come out?

Thanks mate, the part number for the centre caps is 1J0 601 171. I paid £20 for 4 so it's quite expensive for a bit of plastic! Looks great though so definitely worth doing. I had the wheels off when I replaced them and they just push out from the inside.
By the way, I tried a shark fin aerial off ebay and reception was surprisingly good! It was probably because I have a signal amplifier but when I plugged it in it was even picking up TMC updates for my nav system. If you're still looking for one, I can't remember who the seller was, but it was about £8 and there are loads from the same guy.

Awesome looking car mate, love the honeycomb down the middle , and leaving the slat grills by the fogs.

How easy was it to fit the shark fin? i really want one but not sure how to even begin with moving the roof lining. Well to be fair i am way too nervous. Any helpl/tips/pointers/photos?

Erm just the steering wheel needs to come off! I offer a 2 hour service to fit the new cruise control adjustment stalks (All genuine parts and looms).... £145 quid

Chris: it's a Pioneer AVIC-F920BT. Does navigation, ipod, bluetooth, etc. There's a new model out soon I think which has slightly different controls, but I think it's pretty good. Sounds better than the RCD200 anyway! You can get an iphone app for the navigation that lets you find an address using google maps on the phone and then lets you transfer it to the head unit via bluetooth which is pretty cool, and you can adjust the button lights to match the interior. Most of the Pioneer ones do all of this, but it's a pretty good all rounder.

I didn't actually fit the shark fin - I plugged it into the wiring and tried it out but didn't bother to fit it as I'm not sure that I actually like it yet. Its an easy job but I found the access to be the only issue. There's a plastic trim piece at the rear of the headlining that unclips, and because there was no trim in my boot at the time, because I was replacing the carpets, I took out the C pillars and rear grab handles as well to make access easier. Think you'd probably be just able to do it by removing the trim piece at the headlining though. Only problem is that there isn't much space, so you need a pretty long spanner to get to the bolt, which I didn't have, and preferably small hands as well, which I don't have either. I might do it another time, but for now it's staying on the shelf lol.

Right, just been on my holidays, 450 miles on the GTi which was awesome Unfortunately though, the paint didn't stay clean for long! Cue some cleaning and she's back to best:







On a side note, has anyone else been getting rubbish mpg readings from the on board computer. It's normally quite accurate around town for me, but over the last couple of days on 60/70mph roads, it indicated an average of 40.1mpg when I actually was doing 26.1mpg and then said 39mpg when I actually managed 63mpg!

No, that isn't a typo, 63mpg. Nearly fell over when I found out to be honest. There is actually no excuse for not owning a GTi lol.

I bought the Vaglink 3 piece set but left the side ones off as I wasn't too sure I liked them once I had them. Still have them though so I might put them back on and try them for a few days, but the centre one is the difficult one to fit. The sides just pull off.
