GTI Demonstrator availability?

Post by BeezerDiesel »

Hi all, I've not been round these parts for some time (well, I have actually been here most days but not been posting up, just reading up on your GTI experiences).
I used to own a (REVO'd) Polo 1.8t GTI a few years ago and sold it on because it gave me a bad back! No idea why, never could fathom it, I had a Fabia vRS before it and that didn't give me back ache despite the driving position being almost identical.

I moved to a mk5 Golf GTI and subsequently in 2009 bought a mk6 GTI. However once the 6R GTI was announced my ears pricked up and I was just waiting for a dealer to get a demo. More than 6 months later I've still not managed to see one in the flesh, let alone drive one.
My local dealer says they haven't ordered a demo and aren't likely to as they're special order cars; and this is a fairly large dealer too and part of the Inchcape group. The salesman I spoke to didn't offer to bring one in to test drive from another dealer or anything, just thanked me for my interest and moved on to another customer. I can't really be arsed to ring around all of the dealerships that are within a 60 mile radius if the sales people are as little help as the one above.

So, does anyone know of a demo car in the South West of England? I don't use my mk6 Golf GTI much as it's quite a bulky car to drive and I find the throttle lag makes it feel a lot slower than it actually is (it's REVO'd too!), so I quite fancy a Polo GTI which ought to be a lot livlier to drive.

There is a Demonstrator at Northfield VW in Cirencester, also part of inchcape group.

The Swindon also had one that was in stock to be registered for the 11 plate, but I bought it!!

So there may be other dealers out there that might have cars in the waitng to be prep'd as Demo's for the new plate.

Sorry can't help with a demonstrator but as I own both a MK6 GTI and a 6r GTI I can tell you that the Polo is more fun and does feel more lively than the Golf. There really is nothing in it performance wise so you won't be disappointed with the Polo ( I had an Edition 30 before). It all depends what you want, If you don't need the space of the Golf then just go for a Polo. I have a family so need the Golf when taking the family away also the Golf is more refined and as a result would choose the Golf over the Polo if i had to make a choice. However the Polo is much cheaper to run and brings a smile to your face. :D

I've got two teenage sons so I'm a little concerned that the Polo may be a bit small inside. We tried an Ibiza SC some time ago which was tight on rear headroom and had a small boot, however I have a 1997 Ibiza GTI which I use as a daily hack which is plenty big enough inside to carry everyone.
The problems will arise when I need to drive to Gatwick, 230 miles, four up and a car full of luggage. But that's only once a year, couple of other trips around the UK similarly loaded maybe.
That's why I need to spend a bit of time with a demo really, to get a proper feel for the car and see how it copes with four of us crammed in there.

So thanks for all the replies.
I'll see if any of the other local dealers will bring one in when I get chance to phone them at the weekend. :)

Luggage for 4 then the boot will be way too small especially the GTI as it only has 185 litres of space. The holiday scenario is why we have to Golf as well. Alternatively you could go to the airport in a taxi or rent a car as you will be saving money with the Polo for the rest of the year. :D

There is a fair amount of space in the back and have been in once or twice and didn't find it uncomfortable and I am 5'11". Wouldn't want to be in there for hours but if it was just a couple of times a year it would not be that bad. It's the boot which is the problem for big suit cases so another alternative is roof bars and a top box ( not for me but it might be a solution) :D
