What things can VAG COM do?

Just wondering if its worth getting a VAG COM cable + software

Aside from the general fault code readings, can it do anything else?

For example, setings within the car, auto-locking etc. or changes to the multi function display?

last weak i did some reading in my GTI with vagcom.
did some sensors tests etc.
still got stock boost, and it's realy pathethic... 0.56bar on about 2000rpm
by 6000rpm there is only 0.3bar left

after the mapping i'm planning to do in the nearby future it would go to approx 1 - 1.1bar, and 0.7 at 6000.
i guess the diffrence wiull be immense

so to answer the quetion short.. you can do about anything with vagcom

Are there any cheaper versions from the likes of ebay ect worth looking at? Thats a bit steep for what ill want to have a play with I think

Anyone got a cheap-ish kit off eBay that's decent enough to have a fiddle with some simple changes? Door unlocking, anti-jack etc?

In my experience with other VAGs the VAG-COM is pretty much the only one I'd risk plugging onto my car.

Getting a cheap ebay cable working takes a little while... When it does work, you can scan codes, do logs, but I'm not sure what else.

Good for around 20 pounds or less...
