wheel alignment on 9n

Post by vavavoom »

Just had all four tyres changed on an '04 Polo 9n and though it would be a good idea to have a 4 wheel alignment checked/done. However from a bit of googling it seems there isn't much adjustment possible on the 9n, like the rear is fixed, is this correct?

Can anyone confirm what can actually be adjusted on the front and rear of a 9n (i.e. camber, caster, toe...) and does anyone know what values VW specify?

Thanks

The rears are fixed with no ajustment and the fronts have no camber ajustment, only toe in and toe out.
The only way to alter camber on the fronts is with ajustable topmounts, but there a little pricey, and camber and toe on the rears can be ajusted with camber shimms which are around £15-20
but thoretically it shouldnt need doing.

One thing to make clear (maybe), while the rear beam is fixed, the front still needs to get centred with respect to the rear beam, getting a full four wheel alignment carried out should end up:- checking that the rear beam or chassis is not bent (camber and toeing), then centring the front suspension by moving the crossmember side to side to try to equalise the camber and check the castor is correct, then correct the toeing.

Also make sure that your TCA bushes, swivels and TREs are all okay before getting this alignment done - if that work has not been done already.
Anyone that thinks that pit holes etc will not cause misalignment movement that will cause seriously uneven tyre wear should think again.

I've wasted a pair of quality front tyres by letting a proper indie replace my TCA rear bushes and supposedly carrying out a complete four wheel realignment - VW sorted it 10 months later - the tyres only lasted 10 months from new on standard and not sport settings!

Now 18 months later the tyre wear is still even.
