You want HOW MUCH?!

Post by Tahrey1043 »

So I gets this door off a scrappy, and I goes to this local body shop to ask him how much he might want for fittage, just as a quote like so i can pass it on back to the person wot will be paying - see if they want to pay out of pocket, on insurance, or sort it out themselves.

£300 he quotes me, almost straight up, or £370 on insurance. I kinda get the feeling its a scripted answer. So glad my poker face has had some training of late. Play along with the whole thing through him telling me it would be a close run thing from the insurance company maybe writing it off etc.... Got a leaflet about some HelpHire company (they sort out lots of stuff with the careless sod's insurance, get you a courtesy car etc, for just a £10 fee - eh, hang on, that's dodgy, why would *I* have to pay anything at all? Why not add it to the insurers bill?).... phone number, etc. Walk away and let the face drop.

He wanted HOW MUCH for putting a f*****ng door on a dub that might be worth all of £500-600 afterwards?

  Like, it's a job that I reckon I could tackle in an hour, 2 hours tops, with a little 5 minutes assistant help just sticking the first two bolts in. The locks, glass, trim etc.. piece of cake. There'll be a little paint tidying involved before the thing is fitted, but that seriously doesn't justify the cost. Wish I'd waited and scouted out a nicer door first but... apart from the paint... this one was minty fresh at a decent price. Didn't really want to pass that up.

Three hundred quid! I'll leave it to Ms Escorts father's tender mercies!

Joker... think he saw me coming?

If you didn't have to change the locks etc, that'd be 5 minutes to get the old one off and 5 minutes to get the new one on.. it's not even like it needs specialist tools, you can do it with a spanner, a hammer and something thin and pointy like a tent peg :) I have a feeling he's trying it on a bit :D

Bloomin eck! Was that 300 also including the full valet your car was gonna recieve (including steam cleaning the engine bay and underside of the car), any rust or chips dealt with and complimentary aif freshner?

I didn't think so somehow.

Karl.

He told me in strictest confidence (oh.. sorry..*) that he could bill the insurers for 10 hours work. 12 if the paint proved extra problematic!
If I can't get it done right by those responsible for the damage, i'll sort out the dings myself in spare time - nice and relaxing - then put it on with a mate or family help. (The quarterlight and handle/lock is a piece of p*** - i watched the scrappy taking them off this door and it took him less than a minute to do both)... and then bill them at a fiver an hour.
Maybe I should have asked how much to sort out my dodgy touch-ups as well... another £200 on top of the bill wouldn't have hurt! :D (how much for a full respray again? I fancy metallic purple..)

* well at least i havent said who or where
