New Polo DRL's ?
Chaps, can someone tell me what the deal is with the DRL's on the new Polo ?
I've seen a few on the road now and most have the dipped beams units acting as DRL's but I've seen a few with the front fogs only illuminated. I've checked and taillights etc. were off, so only the fogs on, so assumed this to be the DRL's also ?
Do the DRL's in the fogs only work under some trim conditions, i.e. with Xenon headlights or with the foglamp option etc ?
We are just about to pick up my wifes new Polo and when we checked it at the dealers last week, I noticed upon putting the ignition on, the headlights came on only. The wifes car is an SEL model fitted with the twin optic standard halogen headlights, foglights and the static cornering function (in the foglights).
Would this be a VCDS (VAG-COM) tweak to get them to work as foglights instead of dipped beam as I think it looks better ?

On here too Andrew?
It is a VCDS change to set which bulbs the DRLs use

(actually just noticed your avatar)
Now come on then, stop messing about on the forums and get that MDI fitted
Re: New Polo DRL's ?
The DRLs are not the fog lights, they are separate lights activated by the ignition and as you point out do not light the rear lights. As soon as the side/parking lights are lights are put on the DRLs go off.
DRL are only available on top of the range models. Some sort of running lights is now required with all cars sold in the EU since February 2011. So models without separate DRLs will presumably have headlights always on...

Re: New Polo DRL's ?
Yeah, thanks I understand that bud, but it doesn't explain why there are a couple of Polo's round my way that only have the fog lights switched on (no head, side or taillights) when they are driving. I know that the only models that come with proper DRL's are the LED's incorporated into the Xenon option, so would assume that for all non Xenon models, the headlights are the DRL'sGrey_Polo wrote:The DRLs are not the fog lights, they are separate lights activated by the ignition and as you point out do not light the rear lights. Unless as Alex said, they have been VCDS tweaking ?

My Polo 1.4 Highline has no xenon lights. It has the following lighting positions:Norbreck21a wrote:Yeah, thanks I understand that bud, but it doesn't explain why there are a couple of Polo's round my way that only have the fog lights switched on (no head, side or taillights) when they are driving. 0 - (with the ignition on) DRLs (not fog lights) with no rear lights.
1 - sidelights front plus rear lights. DRLs off.
2 - Headlights front plus rear lights. DRLs off. [With headlights on the fog lights act as individual turning lights when the indicators are used or a sharp turn is made].
2 - pull out light switch. Foglights (not the DRLs) plus headlights plus rearlights
2 - pull out light switch to stage 2 as above with single high-intensity rear fog light
I think what you have seen is, as with mine, Polos driving in light position 0. The DRLs are right next to the fogs in the same cluster and can easily be mistaken for fog light. But they cast a very different beam...
Re: New Polo DRL's ?
Are the all the DRL's in fog light cluster? I've seen plenty with the DRL's in the same cluster as the headlights. As for the DRL's in the fogs, i've seen this commonly too and I don't think everyone i've seen like this has vag com to hand to modify it. It's not model specific is it?I think what you have seen is, as with mine, Polos driving in light position 0. Yes in the fog light cluster like in the video below.AJ_7 wrote:Are the all the DRL's in fog light cluster? I've seen plenty with the DRL's in the same cluster as the headlights. I'm in Switzerland where, like Germany, we have 3 trim levels - Trend Line, Comfort Line and High Line. The High Line has the chrome band round the lower grill and DRLs in the fog cluster...
Re: New Polo DRL's ?
Ah right, hoping mine will have the DRL's the same as the one in the video, looks nice

Re: New Polo DRL's ?
Hmmm, this gets stranger then.
The wife's car is an SEL (high line on the continent) model, standard with fog lights and the optional cornering lights built into the edges if the front fogs. But on her car, the DRl's are the dipped beam main headlamps, not the fogs (or cornering lights) as in the video above ?

Re: New Polo DRL's ?
That's strange then! There must be some sort of standard relating to the DRL's, it surely can't be random. I'll just wait and see when I pick mine up and if it is the dipped main beams i'll look into a vcds tweak!

Mine is so annoying and like a Volvo all lights even rear are on in the 0 position it really annoys me I need it so 0 means off may try a different light switch

Re: New Polo DRL's ?
Right, just had a hour or so coding on the wife's new SEL. Done the usual bits, (auto locking, auto unlocking, tear drop wipe etc.), but can't find any settings at all in the central electronics module, that affects the way the DRL's light up. Currently as mentioned, her car has dipped beam and taillights when the switch is in Position 0.
I can't find any way of changing this. Anyone had any luck or can point me in the right direction.
On a side note, and a bit of good news, the 9w7 VW premium Bluetooth kit I purchased in the hope it would work in the Polo with the RCD-510, was a piece of pi55 to install, and works brilliantly. The phone button and voice dialling button on the steering wheel behave perfectly, and the phone book from her mobile was downloaded to the RCD in 30 seconds or so. So apart from not having the details displayed as well in the dash computer (like in my Scirocco) it all works brilliantly with the RCD. Well happy.
Oh, one final call for help, anyone know if the colour scheme on the RCD-510 is changeable from the current silver. I've looked at the coding in VCDS and can't find anything ?
Cheers
Andrew
