Problem is, the outer lights (which I assume are the cornering lights) don't illuminate at all. When turning a corner or indicating, it's the inner part of the fog lamp that illuminates ? Is this right ?
Under what conditions should the outer bulbs illuminate, and could it be they are not properly coded by the factory ?
Right. having done a bit more investigating, it seems that the "static cornering light" function appears to use ONLY the standard foglight bulb (the inner 2/3's of the lamp) and just illuminates the one on the side where you are indicating or turning. Can anyone else who has ordered the corning light option confirm that please ?
It appears that the smaller outer part of the fog light assembly are the day time running lights. This would explain why in my one of my earlier posts, I commented about seeing cars with DRL's as foglights only, it seems to be these outer parts that are switched on with these cars ?.
That does lead me to another question though. It certainly looks like there is a bulb fitted on our car in these outer sections, so whay are these not illuminating as DRL's instead of the dipped beam ? Wonder if it's a coding thing. Hmmmm, methinks an investigation is called for......

I have only seen BlueMotion models in the UK with DRL next to the fogs, all other models use dipped headlights with halogen units.
My Highline Polo has cornering lights. These only work when the headlights are on. They are indeed the fog lights mounted in the front skirt, next to the DLRs (daylight running lights). The cornering lights are activated by the turn signal (blinkers) are when making a tight turn - obviously this will be a low speed.
Note: when the headlights, or side/parking lights are on the DLRs do not work...

Ahh, so are you saying that your Polo doesn't use the dipped beam for DRL's, but instead uses the outer portion of the front fog lamp casing ? In other words, both the inner and outer portion of the fog lamp lens assembly works on your car ?
If so, don't suppose by any chance you could post a picture could you ?

That's it! Though just to complicate matters, it does appear that the full beams are somehow on dim in that Blue Motion in the photo. This is not the case with mine. The DLRs are as above when everything else is off - even the rear lights.
What I really could do with is automatic switching from DRLs to headlights for tunnels etc. The dash already dims automatically when the headlights are off and it gets darker outside. I have found myself driving into tunnels with DRLs on at the front, nothing at the back and black dials...
Actually, don't think the main beams are on at all in that photo. The blue motions have the H4 headlight units, in which the dipped and main beam are combined in one lens with a dual filament bulb (like the old days). The "main beam" in the photo is actually the orange Indicator bulb. I think that's why the blue motion cars need to have the DRL in the fogs rather than the headlights, as their headlights just won't support it ?
Higher spec models are equipped with the H7 headlamps packages which have separate optics for dipped and main beam with the indicators in a separate compartment at the bottom of the headlamp assembly.
I prefer the DRL's of the blue motion (down low) but with the H7 headlamps fitted to our SEL. So I guess I need to source some BM units and see if they can be rigged up?

So can the static cornering function be enabled by programming if you already have fog lights?
There's certainly a tick box for it in VCDS. Makes me wonder what we paid the additional £35 for on the options list if it's just a simple case of ticking a box ? I thought for £35 there would at least be some sort of hardware change, I mean if I'd have known it was just something I could program in 2 minutes with my VCDS I'd have saved the £35 and put it towards more Magners cider
