a different leak

Post by fonzooorooo »

I know about the usual rear washer pipe problems on 9ns... But...

I'm wondering if i'm the only one with a leak in the rear washer where it goes through the shaft of the wiper motor... I've had it apart a few years ago, added an "O" ring, and I've just noticed it leaking again. When it does, it squirts water toward the front of the car inside the trim panel of the tailgate, soaking the sound deadening, and ultimately the boot floor. It appears that this water's coming through 2 tiny holes which presumably are intended to act as pressure relief. To see what happens, I've just plugged them with self tappers and silicon sealant.

I'm quite expecting t to push past the sealsand soak the innards of the gearbox instead!

Every time I look at it, I can never quite understand why it's such a problem.. It's not as if VW haven't made screen washers before!

I think that you should give in gracefully and buy a "rear washer/wiper repair kit" from VW. It contains all you should need to solve this.

IE new wiper shaft + new washer tube + new spray nozzle + two types of grease + new cover gasket and maybe some O rings.

fair enough. I just feel that as nothing appears to be broken, and that this first occurred when the car was about 4 years old (to my knowledge - could've been before) I'd like to find the design fault now, rather than put it off till next time.

I think that you will find that lots of them are faulty without people noticing it, or bothering about it. Mainly I'd expect that the failing starts with the water spray tube starting to seize within the wiper arm shaft - so the washer jet rotates with the wiper arm instead of staying pointing vertically, looks like your one is a variation on this theme in as much as it is causing a leak down into the gear section of the mechanism. If the water spray tube breaks free from its plastic end mounting/tube fitting, (by being twisted round with the wiper shaft), then it will end up leaking as you have described.

Did a service on my rear washer found three joins that were leaking, two under the washer bottle, the last one by the motor was also leaking into the boot lock.....everytime I locked/alarmed the car....the car alarm would go off.....fixed now, got the hair dryer out!! ....nice to know about the repair kit though!!

Ah, now this I like... Al the time I've known the car, it's rotated with the shaft... I never considered that it might not! I'd guess it's done it all the time Karen's had it (from 5000 miles from new!)

I think that all I noticed at first, with my wife's Polo, was that there was a slight increase in noise coming from the rear hatch area when the wiper was running, noticed that there was info on this in either the Seat or Fabia forum, so with a listed part number in mind, I took the plunge! Big mistake as either the Fabia or Ibiza needed a Golf repair kit to fix them - 9N Polo needs a 9N Polo repair kit as it has a different shaft and tube length. So there I was, rear wiper stripped down and not reuseable and one wrong repair kit that I tried to fit, discovered it was wrong, but accidentally chipped a bit off the plastic at the base of the new spray bar - so could not return it to dealer! Repair cost twice the price it should have but wiper was back to being as good as new.
