Hi There
I have a 10 Reg 1.4 SE Polo. I was wondering if anyone was having problem their air conditioning unit. 4 months after buying the car I had a really bad whirling/squealing noise when the Air con was on and the car was in a low gear (1-3) I took it to the dealer and they said the bearing in the a/c compressor had worn and replaced the whole unit and everything worked fine. Then 6 months later (2months ago) the problem has come back. I have taken it to the dealer two times now and they can’t hear it as it doesn’t happen all the time. I’ve just been unlucky It hasn’t happened while the engineer was in the car. They basically told me to come back when the problem becomes more frequent.
The whirling/squeal noise can be heard over the engine and road noise when it’s occurring, so I’m sure I’m not going mad. Anyone else having this issue?

Re: Noisey Air Conditioning
I know of one whole air con compressor unit being replaced here under warranty, might be what yours needs....
Re: Noisey Air Conditioning
When it went in yesterday I did ask for a replacement but because it wasnt squeeling when the enginner was in the car (typical) they wouldnt replace the compressor. They said it cost about £900 for the dealer to replace it and they couldnt justify replacing it without definate proof as VW would want to inspect the faulty unit as its under warrenty. I was told to let it get worse and then bring it back. To top it off it squeeled when I was driving the car back home. I was wondering if this problem was common or im just unlucky

I've had similar issues, tend to just ignore them though as the A/C works fine just the noise is annoying.

Yea im getting along with it at the moment and its working. I asked an engineer what the worse that could happen. He said the bearing would eventaully sieze but the noise unbearable by then. Ive noticed it has started to get more annoying. As mentioned in my first post it was more pronounced in 1st-3rd gear. now it happens in 4th and even 5th. This is my second compressor and I will probably be soon on to a third, I keep telling my dealer so they can report these issues and hopefully if other people have the same VW will look into it.ubiquitous-j wrote:I've had similar issues, tend to just ignore them though as the A/C works fine just the noise is annoying.
