Ko3/Ko4 questions...also traxx anyone?

Post by LeMeph »

No sense in making two threads i figure so ill just make one where i can confuse two topics and make everything awkward and strange :D

Firstly anybody else going traxx at silverstone this year? Would be good too see some other polo's there 'repping' if you will.

Secondly a few Q's about Ko4's. A friend has one for sale in good nick for 100 quid from a prefacelift S3 is this a bolt on upgrade for mine? As im sure i remember that certain o4's fit the GTI without modification and some dont?

If not what actually needs doing to hyrbid the two? Ive got a miltek from the turbo back so dont really wanna make any alterations to the hot side if i dont have to as my empty pockets will cry at the watse of cash lol. I think i read somthing about a hybrid using the hot side from the o3 and the intake side of the o4, and that the o4 side of things needed to be milled out for some reason? Cant remember why though. A pal works for fords in their tool making facilities so he has all the super special gear to do that kind off thing. Just trying to gather info before deciding whether to purchase his turbo or not.

Cheers in advance peoples :)

Phone CR turbos, they do a ko3s hybrid at a pretty decent price and will be able to give you as much info as you need.

Hello mate in short the s3 k04 turbo is not plug and play.

You will also need the manifold, need to change your downpipe, injectors, MAF, fuel pump and all your boost pipes.

Point of note if doing this or the hybrid conversions you will need to uprate to the following as i am in the process of getting these bits for my hybrid.

Injectors ?? (depending on what turbo)
4 bar fuel pump
clutch
3" MAF
and depending on how you feel Rods (for peace of mind).

a good company to talk to regarding hybrid turbos is CR Turbo.

They offer two types one rated between 260-280 BHP and another rated to over 300BHP.

I may have left something out so feel free to add to this anyone.

Hope this helps.

AAaaaah okily dokily. Good stuff gents. Well my budget wont allow for rods lol. After reading that i did have a flashback of reading the standard 19mm(iirc) rods were only good for about 260lb/ft of torque so i guess that would be a must!Never mind then i suppose. Ill just get me front mount and maybe other little bitty bits ready for bigger turbos instead then.

Cheers for the help fellas, ill definately give them a call come closer the time when funds alow for bigger powerz. Though i am contemplating getting a breaker in thats 1.8T and just building somthing beastly on the floor. Means i get to keep her on the road for fun time too. Again once money allows!

You can get about 240bhp from a non hybrid k03s with the right mods and a proper map.

It's pretty varied. You can pick them up cheap on eBay but I personally wouldn't touch them. Id rather buy a properly reconditioned one from a respected turbo specialist that you can trust.

You can't really take someones word for it that it's been looked after properly and the millage it has covered.

Again phone CR turbos they could probably sell you a k04 or you could trade in your turbo and pay the difference.

Big thing to watch is the TIP's on these definitely Reccomend upratting to a forge or samco one. Tend to collapse under increased boost.

don't take one from ebay, most of them are crappy replica's..

a friend of mine has a Ibiza Cupra R (1st model)
and he's installing a K03 hybrid turbo from "Frankenturbo" at this moment.
it will be used on the track also, so the power will not be at his maximum and they expect about 250 - 260Hp.
this turbo also fits the polo, and this will be about the most powergain you will get from a borg warner turbo that will fit the polo.
K04-023 from a TT or S3 will just not fit, even with the richt parts, manifold etc, you still won't be able to fit it.
ABS is in the way where the turbo will come.

i say, stay with the K03s you have now,
put a exhaust, intercooler, airfilter, 4bar FPR and a custom mapping on it and you'll be running about 240Hp.
i have those upgrades and the car goes verry good.
not many cars can follow me
so if you do want to put in a new turbo, go for something a bit stronger.
GT28RS or so.
it's a bit more laggy, but also less stressfull on the rods.
at about 3000RPM it kicks in and goes hard all the way to the red zone, creating about 330Hp
do this and i guess there will be no car at all on the street that can win from you.
(sure a veyron, ferrari's etc are faster, but they still will be supprised and you won't run into those cars verry often, there will allways be somebody faster  )

Don't go r tech. They make turbos from Chinese parts. My bro had the hybrid from them 5 turbos later took them to court in the end he now tuning a Garret gt28.

Nick at r tech is developing a bolt on if you got in contact with him he will also say stay away from cr turbo dynamics is the place to go for hybrid turbos can't say I know of any issues from their turbos and I have one on my derv and it's been fine. Just avoid cr turbos.

I've herd a few stories about turbos failing from CR but I herd that the failures were down to poor oil feed/ oil pressure issues on the cars them selves not the turbo units them selves. But any reputable garage fitting a turbo should be checking oil feed and pressure when installing.

I've also herd of plenty people running CR hybrids with zero problems. You will always here more of the bad stories than you do the good I suppose.

GT28r would be a nice bit of kit to own! Lots of power with less boost!

Every time he changed the oil and first on got new feed lines and the turbo would last a month or two at a push. On the 3 times they said oil starvation. So he took it to vw for them to presure test the oil system at the vital parts and was running fine he put a standard turbo back on it while he was taking them to court (turbo had done 150000 miles) and map was running way past the safe limit of the turbo and it was fine this proved that the turbo was at fault. So they gave him another and 2 months later it was gone again. This time oil contamination. So a sample of oil was taken and came back fine. He was not happen so got a 28. Cr turbo is down my garage now and sounds like dirt is in the bearing but everything was fine and the 28 is not even mapped yet and it goes better than the hibrid pulls all the way not letting off at all.

It might be worth signing up to audi-sport.net and PM'ing a bloke called badger bill. He runs a company that tune VAG and races an Ibiza year in year out. What he doesn't know about the VAG 1.8T isn't worth knowing in my opinion...
