"Clunk" when changing gear? Engine Mounts?

Post by BennoGTi »

I have a problem, usually only going from 1st to 2nd at fairly high revs (4kish)

Its a rather loud clunk, or what seems is a double clunk, coming from what sounds like the left hand side of the engine (when sitting in the car) as if the engine is rocking back then forward

I tried to do a bit of research and came up with maybe engine mounts loose or shot, how likely is this?

How hard would it be for me to check the mounts myself, considering access ect. How many engine mounts are there for a start? :-D

Any help greatly appreciated

Recently had a ecs stage 1 clutch fitted about 600-800 miles ago, maybe the mechanic left an engine mount loose? :-o

EDIT: Oh and just before the clutch I had my cam belt, tensioners etc done, maybe and engine mount bolt was left out? How can I check? :-(

Cheers

get some one to watch your engine as you try to pull away with handbrake on and watch for the engine moving alot. 15 degrees or so.

it maybe wishbone bushes tho

aixbox and battery out for gearbox side
coolant bottle out for driver side
jack car up for dog bone mount

mine clunked under heavy use with new clutch until i uprated my dog bone. Awsome do this for cheapish

Opened up the bonet and got someone to "pull off" with the handbrake on, the engine doesnt seem to rock all that much to be honest, maybe an inch or two

Ill check the mounts tomorrow when I get home from work

Hmm gear synchro? how could I tell? Would I need a garage to check?

Cheers

Ok I have sorted my problem..

I noticed yesterday, the "knocking" noise when I started the engine, so I thought it can't be the gearbox or synchro

Popped the bonet open and discovered that my K&N filter had come loose on it's mount and was knocking against the suspension housing every time the engine naturally rocks on it's mounts!

So stupid of me, oh well, at least it was nothing expensive in the end :-)
