Expansion Tank Exploded

I've just spoke to my GF and while she was sat in traffic (30 min delay on A470 because of an accident) she heard a bang. She got out and phoned me after looking under the bonnet. She's told me the expansion tank has gone the way of the pear. Could have been a number of things i'm thinking. May have been a blocked valve in the cap, a weak seam in the tank its self, the fan not working (i've never checked) or a combination of these things. Is this common because just before we got the Polo my mate said he'd changed the tank. Anyway i called VW in Merthyr and they can get the parts in by Thursday and for the tank and cap its just under £40. I'd rather put genuine VW back on as its quite an important part.

Personally that's the first expansion tank i known to explode on a polo so dont believe it is that common! Just Unfortunate luck!
