Considering a 9N3 GTi, advice welcome

Hi guys,

I've been away from Polos for 3 years now, but it's an addiction I can't seem to kick. My 6N2 GTi was quite frankly the best car I've ever owned, and I need some of that Polo goodness in my life again. Also, the Mk5 Jetta I'm running doesn't really fit on my new drive....

As such, when weighing up the small perfomance hatch options in my budget, my mind instantly went to the 9N3 GTi.

I've been looking at a few on AutoTrader, but most of them are literally miles away from where I live. So, when I do make the long journey to view one, I'd be very grateful for any advice, hints, tips and general things to look out for with the 9N3 and the GTi in particular.

Despite being a member here for 8.5 years, I haven't really been around as of late, so I apologise in advance if there's a massive thread already answering this which I've overlooked!

Best hothatch I have ever owned tbh....... The stage 2 polo's are real quick cars and keep up with likes of ST, Megane RS, Clio RS, Corsa VXR and 'VTec Yo' etc......

Things to lookout are the gearbox issues (there is alot of info if you search on here) but they were rectified in the newer 07-09 models, front arm rear bushes etc Engine is pretty much bulletproof.

Make sure you buy one with all the extras on, I waited months until I found one which had everything I wanted I.e leather seats, climate control, winter-pack and lots more. There a real nice car to drive and im glad I got one, so much better to drive than my old peugeot

Really a good car.. It is.

However, some things I would look for/ ask about before you took the drive;

Stone chips in the hood

I didn't ask about this when I took the train 8 hours to buy mine, and got sort of pissed he didn't mentioned that, because the were.. Well, quite a lot.

However, I'm happy with the car ^^ Just yeah.. Would had liked to know about it you know..? Can be expensive to repair.

I've had a read up on the gearbox issues affecting 2006 cars, as one of the ones I was considering would fall within that model year.

In real terms, how likely are there still going to be GTi's out there essentially waiting to suffer gearbox problems?

Given the "unofficial recall" to change the gearbox oil, would it still be possible that cars out there could have knackered syncros?

If you give a dealer the registration number, they can check to see if it's had the recall done. I'd have thought most of them with a decent service history would have, I nearly bought a 2006 car and the dealer told me that it was being flagged up on the computer when the cars were in for services to be done.

I love my GTi, went 200 miles to get it but worth the journey. As said, wait for one which has the options you want, there's quite a few about.

are you crazy??
stage II GTi will eat every single one of those.
if you talk about "keeping up", you must name faster cars as those you said.
i have a stage II polo and rolling start from 2nd gear@50Km/u it stays a nose in front of a E46 M3 up to 200Km/u.
after that youre talking about keeping up with the M3
i'm equally as fast as: Evo X with 350Hp, Nissan Sunny GTI-R 280Hp, Civic EP3 250Hp and alot more.

so as advice, best bang for buck those polo's

stage II GTi will eat every single one of those.
if you talk about "keeping up", you must name faster cars as those you said.
