Hi just wondering what equipment i need to change the front pads and discs on a 57 plate 1.4 se polo? spanner sizes etc. Also what type of discs and pads do i need? vented/ non vented etc? how could i tell the difference ?

If you're planning on replacing with standard kit, then the parts department at the dealer is the easiest bet for finding this sort of thing out. They always have stacks of brake parts about as well so you wont need to wait about.
Can't remember offhand the sizes, but they are vented fronts and non-vented rears. You can tell a vented disc because when you look at the thin edge of it, you should see a series of holes around the entire rim. Literally a vent running through the disc. Non-vented discs are just a metal disc. The difference is clear when you compare them side by side.
As for replacing, jack/axle stands, good socket set, calliper rewind tool for the rears and a G clamp for the fronts (to push the piston back), copper grease for the pads (though not the side that makes contact with the disc!) and some brake cleaner as well to remove the protective coating on the discs as well. It's fundamentally a simple job, just a bit stressful because it's brakes. Might be worth getting a Haynes manual as they cover this sort of thing quite well. Only other thing to watch out for is seized calliper bolts, I got around to replacing my front discs and pads the other day and couldn't get the bolts off! Had to give up until I have more time to sort it

You need this one : Polo 9N Haynes Manual
There isn't a specific 9N3 one because the cars are so similar. The mechanical stuff is all the same though so you can still use it to help. The stuff that is 9N3 specific is only really the bodywork and a bit of wiring, but you can muddle through those no problems.
