Replacing the cup holder

Post by Mattheuz »

Hi. I've just bought a second hand Polo 1.4 s 80 with a 56 plate, and the cup holder doesn't work... I think I tested every other aspect of the car before buying except for that one, so I'm kicking myself a bit!

Anyway, I've managed to get a replacement cup holder unit off of ebay, and I'm trying to figure out how I'd go about fitting it. I've prised the old cup holder out of the unit by about an inch or so using a spoon, but then it's just stuck fast and I don't want to force it and break anything and have bits drop behind the dash and rattle etc...

Thing is, I'm a total novice with cars, and have never done anything like this before. I've replaced a rear reverse light and windscreen wipers but that's about it!

I've had a look on loads of forums and stuff but just can't find any instructions on how to replace the cup holder. I can't even find a Haynes manual for my car so I'm feeling a bit stuck! It doesn't seem like a hugely complicated job and I don't want to have to spend £££s that I really need right now by taking it to a garage.

If anyone's done this before, or just knows how it's done and can offer any advice, it would be much appreciated. I'd like to know if it's possible to just remove the cup holder and slot the new one in its place, or if I'll have to remove the centre console to get to any holding clips or something like that. If I need to remove the centre console, what tools will I need?

Sorry if some of this is basic stuff! Hope you can help. Cheers for reading.
