Polo GTi multifunction steering wheel buttons retrofit

So will the buttons set (5K0 998 537 B) include the little control module or should I already have the control module because the wheel already has the DSG buttons?

I'm literally chewing my nails...

If your car is a GTI with DSG buttons on the wheel then you will already have that module so don't need the one from the ebay seller.

So all I have to do is order part number 5K0 998 537 B, fit it and I can free my MFD from the tyranny of VW's kleine Arschloch!

I'll post the price of the part from the stealers tomorrow when I get in from work. I'll see what they'll charge to fit it aswell - if it's a 50 squid job then I might just let them get on with it. It's there problem then.

I called VW customer services after my order had been confirmed and I got a build week and they told me "computer says no" to just adding it to the build (car was still months away from getting built). Even if the car is ages away from being built, once it's confirmed - you've no chance of changing anything. Anyway my stupid fault.

Well made up now. I'll post back with costs and stuff tomorrow.

Just thinking about it, would the steering wheel even have to be removed to fit the buttons? If it's just those two clips at the back and the airbag unit comes away, then the 2 torx screws to remove the button assemblies?

Price is on my previous post, £116 inc VAT from VW, most dealers will tell you it won't fit and will refuse to even try.

No the steering wheel doesn't have to be removed.

First remove the battery, and then get a small mirror to help locate the spring clips



The airbag does take some force to remove as there are two other clips inside the wheel.

Love it, awesome - this is a life saver for fools like me who didn't order the right wheel in the beginning.

However - I've just been on the VW configurator site and it appears the MFSW is a £205 option!! So it's actually cheaper to retrofit the MFSW buttons than spec it in the beggining!!

The mind boggles!

Ok so I've ordered the buttons - should come Wednesday so I'll let you all know how I get on!

Just for reference a well known VAG retrofit company based just above London, got back to me with a price of £295 + vat to retrofit the buttons!

Either they're marking the part up ridiculously or they genuinely charge £300 an hour for labour.

Anyway, they're miles away from me in Leeds and I'm not scared of the big bad airbag. I sleep next to one every night.

My torx bits are nearly rattling at the prospect of being used again...

It doesnt even take an hour. Last time i did this retrofit on my Mk5 GTI DSG, it took 20 minutes max. That was including waiting a few minutes after the battery was disconnected.

One quirk I found today, if you use the original controls on the end of the stalk it stops the steering select buttons working until you switch the ignition off and one again.

Hmm, wonder if I can vag com that out, picking buttons up today I'll check...

The proper fix is to replace the wiper stalk with the correct version for mfsw equipped cars, nothing can be done in the coding.

Simple fix is to just remember to not the stalk buttons.

Can anybody get the part number for the stalk without buttons. Tried searching but having no luck
