I bought a Polo this week, my first car. I've been looking through this forum the past few days and looking at ways of modifying it. I don't have a lot of money to play with (damn first car insurance ) So I was just wondering if you have cheap ideas to modifying it a bit?





I'm on the lookout for a honeycomb grill and nicer VW hub caps (alloys beyond my budget). I also want to change that monstrosity of an aerial but I'm having trouble finding the base for a stubby aerial. I'm going to price some spotlights too with the new grill down there.

I also need to give it a major clean. It's been cleaned of course but hasn't received a proper buffer and polish in a long time I'd say. What products and methods do you recommend to getting it back shining?

I think the first thing to do would be some new wheels, you'll be surprised what you can get for not a lot of money! Keep an eye on the forums, there are always wheels for sale. Then definately some coilovers.......

Getting both of these will change the look of the car straight away then you can do other bits and bobs when you get the money/time.

Nice starter car though, I had a 1.0E from passing my test and had it for 6 years..... Wouldn't have chosen anything else!

Unfortunately I'm from Ireland so it'd be difficult to pick up anything from here, especially wheels, I assume most people are over in the UK. I'd be happy with something basic, even the VW hub caps you can get. Anything is better then what's on at the minute and they're very scuffed up close as well.

Is there any guides on here or somewhere else to cleaning the car? A real proper one, she needs it! I have a buffer as well, one that plugs in to the lighter, but I'd say I'd be better off using some good old elbow grease then that.

The handle bars on each door is in bits, are those easy picked up does anyone know? Maybe get them in a scrap.

You can even try E-bay or the local ad mags for some half decent wheels. G60's are not too expensive and look good.

Theres a detailing/bodywork section on here so it might give you some tips..... I never clean my car, my boyfriend is a detailer in his spare time so he does it for me lol

The handles are a nightmare! My driver side was all flaking away on the 1.0 and the ones in the GTI are the same.... Just wrap them it will be easier. They will probably be the same on any other polo you try to get them from awell.

Yeah I love the G60s, I'm looking out for a set. Hopefully I can find some at a reasonable price.

You can get leather covers for the handle on eBay but mightn't be worth it really.

I'd also like to get a light for the air conditioning dials, maybe an LED that I can stick over them that can be pressed on/off.

Literally all i did to my 1.0 was GTI grill, black badges with white inside, coilovers and ATS Cups and a few stickers on the back window

So shouln't cost you too much to get it looking nice

I think I'll change the headlights too. One is very cloudy and the other seems to be quite new so the last owner might have replaced it. I was thinking of stickers too but something very typical and boring like a Liverpool crest of something

Have no idea man, sorry. The cheapest i was getting quoted was €1,700 but with my old man and me named driver we got it down to 1400 between the two of us. On most websites I was getting quotes well over 2 grand.

I was looking at those aerials on eBay. I can get the aerial itself for a few quid but the base itself is usually over 20 pounds. how would i go about getting handles off VW?

And one last thing, i need a brake light in the back and the two front indicator lights are very poor, what are the best bulbs to get? i wouldn't mind changing the yellowish headlights to look something a bit whiteish in front!

I have 6k HID's look fair nice with LED sidelights and silver indicator bulbs.

As for rear brake lights nothing beats an original bulb. Just any old clear 21w for brakes on the rear.

And just go to a vw dealership to order parts

If its just the aeriel base seal they're about £3 off eBay and dead easy to fit!
