2008 Polo questions

Hi,

My missus has just upgraded her older 2006 55 E Polo to a 2008 Polo 1.2 70 Match - a nice little motor!

I've got a couple of question though - first one is I've noticed quite a dramatic increase in wind noise in the new polo above 50mph, with an irritating whistling noise! I've checked all the door seals and windows etc and all seems ok. It seems to be coming from the windscreen though - and not just one side?

The other question is about the canbus wiring. I've had to removed the RCD200 as its packed in. I put a nice simple Pioneer unit in using the ISO adaptors provided by my local motor factor (marked as for a Golf Mk5?) and it works - but doesn't power off with the ignition. I guess this is down to canbus - can anyone tell me what to wire my 'live' on the stereo to that will allow ignition control? I guess the cigarrette lighter is an option but how do I get to the wiring for that?

With regards to the wiring, it depends what sort of an adaptor you have. If you have a canbus adapter (should have a small box with wires going in and out) then try swapping the red and yellow(?) wires with the inline fuses on them. This sometimes works. If it doesn't, then you'll need to get an ignition live from somewhere or just replace the ISO adapter you have with a canbus adapter, which is completely plug and play.

You can get an ignition live from the cigarette lighter but you need to remove the trim around the gear lever. The cupholder trim around the handbrake unclips by pulling it upwards, and then the main trim piece around the gear lever is secured by two Torx screws behind the mat in the storage area. Reach underneath it to unclip the gear gaiter and wiring plug to the cigarette lighter and remove it. There are three wires: earth, power and illumination. Can't remember which one is the power as I'm nowhere near my Haynes manual but if you have a multimeter you should be alright. It's very easy to pass a wire from behind the radio to this area so you should be fine.

For what it's worth though, I use a canbus adapter. Effort for removing soldered connections if I want to put the car back to standard...

Thanks for the info - I only have a simple ISO adaptor. It came with a loose red 12v cable so obviously designed for custom fitting!

I connected the red cable to the second yellow/red cable in the 'car side' quadlock. It works but independently of the ignition. My ciggy lighter seems to work with the ignition so I guess this is my best best - I'll have a go at dismantling the surround tomorrow! I guess the two yellow/red cables are permanently live so one is ok for the battery backup.

The wind noise is odd - I can understand the general wind noise but its the additional whistle that gets on my nerves! On the previous car I never noticed it.

Got this sorted. If anyone else is trying this I wired the switched Live (on the stereo) to the cars connector Aux - that seems to be switched on the ignition. Its on the quadlock and is the brown/red wire.

I wired my 'boosted' aerial to this as well and all seems to work well! It was easier than trying to get to the ciggy lighter wiring.
