Possible New Member, well probable new member for 6 months

Post by DoctorT »

quick background

Currently Myself and Mrs have a mercedes c200 and A160 cdi.....in september we ordered Two Tiguan TDI bluemotion 4motion se's but delivery has just been put back til april 2012  so , need a change of the c200 for the upcoming winter (we moved out to a rural setting where snow can be a wee bit of a problem) the A class was fine in the snow and the tiguans will be even better I think. so what to get to fill the 6 month gap. I'm teaching my eldest son to drive and need to get a suitable car for him to have as a 'first car'

Dealer has a new 1.2 60ps match in metallic black (3dr) ready for immediate delivery...what do you think?, anyone have this model....??wish they had added something/reliability/etc etc I personally think the low insurance group will be of great benefit to a 17yr old lad (well his dads' wallet!) and of course I can use it over the winter til the tiguans arrive

what do you all think?

ps, 1st post but thanks to everyone for all the great info I've found here

Welcome to the forum. :)

The 1.2 is a little underpowered, but should suit your son and day to day duties well. I've driven one of the 1.2 engined Polo's and the engine needs revs to get anything from it, but around town and on the motorway it keeps up with traffic no problem. The ride is good and the seats are comfortable. MPG isn't as high as the official figures, but they never are with small engines. What specification does it have in terms of extra goodies?

As you are only having it through the winter, then I'd not worry too much about air con if it doesn't have it, but it is a decent "nice to have" option.

Similar sitution to me a few years back. I was 17 and needed a reliable car as I travelled 40 miles a day to University and back. I opted for a 1.2 Polo Match but it was the 70ps version rather than the 60. It was brilliant for me with the low insurance and everything. The main problem was petrol consumption, the figures in the brochure are way out when your on the motorway at 65-70.

The Polo Match is a brilliant car without a doubt, but from my own experience, i'd consider the 1.2 70ps as a minimum. Sorry to put a downer on the subject but i'm sure you appreciate my honesty.

Hi , ive had my 1.2match 60ps for little over a month now. The 1.2 is a little underpowered but you only really notice goin up a long or steep hill, around town and motorway ive found i fine for normal use. Im getting ave 39 mpg . Ride can be a little bouncy but i am coming from a LS400 so maybe thats just me. I love the stereo, 6speaker and quality sound. After a month.... I love it and in my opinion would be a good choice in your sitation and requirements.

Thanks all, the match seems to have a decent spec as standard including aircon/alloys etc thankfully my son is no 'petrolhead' and just wants saftey and style over speed. The only 'extra' this one has is metallic paint. As I have 3 sons, it will get at least 8-9 yrs use so as a long-term proposition, it seems reasonable....If I can get a decent deal on it, I will have it by next week. as a long-term proposition for me, well it doesn't really matter as I'm waiting for my 2012 Tiguan (with a load of nice toys!)

Thanks again and I'll keep you all posted
