Not sure how to remedy the problem without replacing the whole unit, but I will say this: Don't try taking it apart - you won't be able to get it back together without breaking the (already half-buggered) map light mechanism. Ask me how I know. I've already destroyed two lights

Edit: how do you change the bulb then?

Ash is right, I've destroyed one of these as well by trying to dismantle it. Worth a go if its damaged and you're bored but I'd definitely be looking at replacing it. I don't remember it being mega expensive anyway...

The map lights are W5W bulbs, with housings that you can twist off from the topside of the unit to replace. On the new ones, the main bulb is similar, but on the older ones it's a festoon bulb. You can replace this by popping off the lens cover either by poking it through one of the open holes for the map lights or by getting a watchmakers screwdriver or similar and gently prising it off.
