Need some advice

Post by benmkiv »

So today I got crashed into. Guy went straight into the bak of me and admitted fault.

Do I push to put it through his insurance or settle it outside of insurance companies between me and him?

I'm unsure if my insurance will be affected if I claim off of his since I still need to declare the accident regardless of blame. My insurance company said no but I can't help but distrust most of what they say.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

If you fix it yourself, you don't need to declare it.

I'd settle for him paying the repairs at a bodyshop of your choice. If he offers to get his mate or so to sort it, then you should be very wary.

It would definitely be at my choice I'm just not sure what other damage it's causes because my boot open light is stuck on now even though it's clearly shut. I guess the body shop will tell me anyway

Strictly speaking, you need to declare it to insurance. It gets logged as a 'no-claim incident' or something like that. However, this invariably leads to an increase in premiums for absolutely no reason. If the car is driveable, leave the insurance out of it, get a quote and get on the bloke to pay for the repairs. Not worth the extra hassle/cost to you of going through insurance.

I was stung by this last year. Someone hit me, told insurance but sold the car before it was repaired. Nobody paid anything to fix it but my premium is nearly 50% higher than it should be. It's legalised theft...

You're kidding so even if it isn't my fault? I'll still pay more?? Like you said legalised theft I'm only 20 and begrudge paying any more for my insurance than I already am.

As said I think it's only cosmetic but maybe something up with the boot. It's bull!

Run a couple of quotes with and without the accident declared online and see what the difference is. I'm with Admiral and it's a complete joke. They also sent me a renewal that was £400 more than the cost of taking out a new policy with them... I personally would think very hard about calling them up if I had some cosmetic damage. Boot might be something as simple as a microswitch so worth getting it checked out first anyway mate.

DNot tell the insurance a thing if the guy is willing tO cough up. You will end up paying more in your Premium whether or not a claim is made, your fault or not.

was willing to settle without going through insurance but the guy offered me £30 for the damage which was poo, so i took it through insurance n glad i did as my bak got injured so claiming injury.
was told by my insurance that it wouldnt wouldnt effect my future insurance coz third party was at fault.

Yeah man see this is the thing my insurance say that it wot affect but they have a habit of saying that an then you end up having to bend over and lube up for them. Prices are bad enough already, my back is a bit sore though ;) maybe I could cover next years premiums :p

cheers for all the advice guys
as I've looked at the car better today i think theres some damage to something behind the bumper because the stud where the catch latches on to has moved slightly so the boot will not close properly, going to a body shop on monday to get a quote and see if the guy will foot the bill if not gonna get it done on his insurance because this is too much hassle for me.

ill see! :)

So long as you have his details, then you can go through insurance if he starts messing you about. Hope the damage isn't too bad mate.

I'm sure you guys are joking, but please don't claim for injury if you aren't actually badly injured. Fair play on getting physiotherapy if you actually have whiplash but the number of people who can't differentiate whiplash from a bit of a neck twinge is unbelievable. Fact is, when cars collide, it's going to hurt. Claiming for medical bills just because you can just screws everyone over for insurance come renewal time. Not having a dig at anyone in particular, since I obviously don't know any circumstances etc, but it's a pet hate of mine every time I get a renewal letter through.

mate i totaly understand where ur cumin from, had myself a e46 b4 the polo. when my insurance sent me a renewal quote of £2700 for the BM i had no choice but to downgrade to the polo.
people do geniunly get injured, my accident was bak in sept and i still have a sore spine and waiting on MRI scan.
in my case the guy that hit me was on coke, powder on his nose n u shoulda seen his reactions.
he shouldnt have been on the road at all, the situation couldv been much worse if he ran sum1 ova so in my thoughts tighter laws on drugies and holics.
jus glad that me little 1 wernt hurt as she was in the bak seat, poor thing was scared to get into a car for a couple of months.

Yeah was joking about myself claiming for injury but that's fair comment on your part mate glad your little one was alright.

Got a quote for the work of 650 which apparently he wasn't interested in footing the bill for so it's going through insurance in just hoping they don't write her off :/
