Polo 9N3 1.4 TDi S 70 ps - Fuel Economy and Driving Style

Post by Appl3.Pi3! »

Hi guys!

A couple of weeks ago I bought a used Polo 2007 9N3 1.4 TDi S 70 ps with 38000 miles.

I am just wondering what a fair fuel consumption should be.

My daily route is:

in the morning:
3.9 miles rural road
13.5 miles motorway
7.0 miles urban road

in the evening:
9.1 miles urban road
8.7 miles motorway
3.9 miles rural road

I usually keep a speed of 70mph on the motorway.

After the first 300 miles I got a fuel consumption of 50mpg and honestly I was expecting a bit better.

It that the best I can get?

Any suggestion about how to drive the car keeping the fuel economy at its best?

In particular for this car and this engine what is considered over-rev and under-rev?

I do a cruise control service and have done a number of polos on this forum including my own and about to do my new 9n3 GTI. It works wonders with fuel efficiency and you can even use it when in a 30mph zone in the middle of a town. Makes life so much easier!

Well so... what about 50mpg? Should I get better or not? And what about an efficient driving style? :D

when was it last serviced? looks as though might be due for a oil change soon. I had a 1.4 TDI 70 aswell before my GTI I got 66 mpg then 70 mpg after i fitted a chip. Tts removable aswell just in case you wish to sell the car. You can pick it up for £80 it was money well spent i saved so much for year i had it.

The thing is the car has been serviced in June (about 2500 miles ago), thus it the oil should be fine... :(

About the tuning box, my intention is exactly to buy the one you linked hoping to get a couple of mpg more. But I want to figure out if/why the mpg are low first.

What about under-rev for this kind of engine?

Dirty injectors? There's the chance that it's coked up in places such as the inlet manifold too. Perhaps invest in a bottle of injector cleaner, if you notice a difference after a tank or two then maybe there's coking elsewhere as well. The previous owner may have done a lot of short journeys, who knows.

Consider a cotton panel air filter too. More air entering engine = consistently cleaner burn = happy diesel :D

I'll have a go with an injector cleaner for sure and see what happens.

Fitting a cotton air filter sounds a good idea too.
