1.2s 9n3 :D

Post by jem-9n3 »

Hi guys :D

Right so i know most of you guys on here dont now who i am but i would like to find out a few things and clear some stuff up so i can finally decide on getting some more bits for my car.

1.- i have heard alot about lowering cars etc and i bought a great set of 2nd hand coilovers off 'MODDED9N' so ive experienced abit too. but, alot of people say if your just doing springs, only go to 30mm as any lower will damage the dampers.

does that put 50mm springs out of the equation then?

I'm asking that because basically, the car i've done most of the mod's to is my sisters, who is currently at university and has been for a couple of years. After having to spend alot of money on replacing bushes, discs, pads and a pair of tyres, my dad made me take the coilovers off. He is convinced that the coilovers wrecked the bushes.

2.- is my dad right or was it actually just wear and tear due to being a 55 plate?

3.- How much is a decent set of bushes? (all round)

Thats the questions pretty much over so if someone could shed some light on that area, it would be much appriciated.

Now on to me and the car.

So, i drive a 2005 (55) 1.2s. Its alright as a first car but as anyone would imagine, 55bhp its absolutely shoite.
i'm not bothering doing anything to the engine as its pointless, and would probably end up loosing more power, so all the mod's i have so far have just been (from front to back),

- Badgeless honeycombe grill that sometimes go on.
- Black badge with red inserts on standard grill
- LED sidelights and HID 6000k
- Headunit so i can use my ipod etc. also has a flip screen (purchased from MODDED9N)
- Chavy sub, amp with ported box to have abit of bass in my life :D
- LED number plate bulbs. thought i might aswell since one was broken due to being rear ended :(
- Front and rear 20mm hubcentric spacers, rear has another 5mm on

I'll take a few better pictures tomorrow after a quick clean. cheers 8)

I seem to remember that there was a known problem with the bushes being a bit weak and prone to disintegrating. I've had two 9N3s - a 2005 (55) 1.4S which had bushes on the way out when I sold it, and now my GTi which has just had it's bushes replaced over the summer. All of this was on standard suspension so I wouldn't have thought the coilovers were to blame.

I'd avoid the 50mm springs mate, as the dampers won't have any give in them at all when you hit a bump if you're lowered 50mm on the standard parts. I suppose you could always get uprated dampers instead but everyone else seems to prefer coilovers.

Bushes themselves aren't particularly expensive, I'll try and find my receipt to find out how much I paid for my replacements unless someone else can give you a price.

Car sounds pretty good as well, look forward to those photos!

If you're keeping coilies on go for poly bushes. There is a lot less flex in them Solid up the ride. Around 120 for a set of poly bushes. A lt co
Pared to standards but every person I know running coils advises them.

if you lower your car on lower and stiffer suspension its gonna take its toll on other moving parts, so like top mounts on firm coilovers tend to go, when i installed my coilovers i put in new top mounts, also polybushed all around, seat sport bushes and a superpro engine mount to stop any kind of movement....

in regards to your old man saying coilovers making it worse, i'd say some of it is right, solid ride will cause the bushes to have a shorter life span, same with your tyres, did you get the tracking done after you installed the coilovers? if not then you will most likely have uneven wear on them...

could be summit or nowt really, just make sure you do the right steps!

Thanks alot guys thats all sounding really good. i think i will try and source some poly bushes and hopefully try and get it all fitted again.

alot of this is making sense now,

when we got the car i strongly doubt the bushes had been changed since new, so i reakon the coilovers finished them off haha.

after getting them fitted i didnt get my allignment done straight away so that again was probably most of the cause for the problems.

my issue now is that because i haven't had the coilies on for a while they have just been im my shed, which to be honest isnt insulated or anything at all. i know they are normally fitted to a car (obviously) and cars normally sit out in the cold for long periods of time, but will they be seized up? :(

basically, all i want is a bit of lows and a nice stance at the moment.

not too much to ask is it haha :|

Far too much to ask been asking for this for three years only just gonna get round to sorting it :p make sure you grease them. Shouldn't think they'll be seized the shed will be fairly dryish I'd imagine keeping away most moisture which is what will corrode and sieZe them

haha three years is quite a long time but just like everyone who is into cars, you are never done. you always want to change things :D

Well as promised i tried taking a few pictures, but some costomer at work took longer than expected so it was bloody dar by the time i had finished a quick clean.

So last night i had a play with my new amazing product i got hold of. i highly recomend this even if its just to see what it would look like sprayed, because it peels right off like tape or a vinyl if you hate it :D it is... PLASTIDIP!! i bloody love it haha. this is what i used it for when i got bored;

Ah sweet, well if you Mean what would I do if I had a red one, then probably I would avoid black because it's pretty over used lol, so maybe a gun metal grey/anthracite, then inside the circles, do that bit black, red or something.
