Help - 2000 1.4MPI - misfires in wet

Post by pcarine »

My Girlfriends car started playing up recently in the extreem wet. It seemed to be misfireing - this was later confirmed by the error codes which were read when the Engine check light was checked and turned off by the garage.

The mechanic seemed to say that it was quite regular with some polo's and that the air intake can sometimes suck up spray and subsequently misfire - has anyone else experienced this? He said that if I were to take off the air intake tube and move it this should help avoid the problem again.

The engine ran just fine after the misfires, but needed the 'engine check' light removing. - If this happens again is there a way of resetting this without going to the garage at £50 a go.

Let me know if you have heard about this ?

I had a Lupo to fix which had a problem like this, regardless of what was changed it would missfire in the rain.

We simulated this using a hose for tests.

I was about at the point of coding in a spare ECU when I noticed the earthing point in the scuttle panel had actually come undone and was shorting in the wet.

I suggest you have a look at the earth points all round.
