Fuel Consumption

Post by jamesy1972 »

Hi all, well finally picked up my 1.4 TDI Polo (2004). Filled it up to the brim so I could see how far I could go on 1 tank. And am now very surprised to have the warning light on after only 380 miles. I don't drive like a loony. This is a mix of town and motorway. Mad thing is 240 of these mile were motorway at an average of 75mph.
Not happy. My old petrol rover could almost do that.
Is this normal? Have I bought a wrong un? What do I need to check, where etc?
I have checked the airflow meter and given it a clean with electrical cleaner, checked air filter and put a good quality fuel system cleaner in.

Any help on this would be great.

Cheers

what was the average MPG? How much actually went in the tank?

Could be the fuel system cleaner. what cleaner was it?

Well I filled it up to the brim, so the full 45 litres was in the tank. Only put the system cleaner in once I had got home concerned it had used to much fuel. Works out at between 38 mpg and 42 mpg. Thats wrong for a diesel in my mind.
Fuel cleaner was Wynn's formula gold diesel treatment.

Any suggestions?

Drive on the motorways at 65 max for good mpg. The 1.4 gearbox is a shortish ratio. Last year on way to gti inter national my mate 1.4 tdi fuel needle didn't move (was doing 60 on way up) that was 200 miles roughly but driving back at 80ish he done a fair bit more like almost a 1/4 of a tank I think same trip same sort of conditions.

To get gd mpg got gotta use the gear box. Keep rpm between 2000 and 1500rpm.

Any VAG 02J or 6 speed 02M. With a compatible flywheel/clutch combo of course...
