Beginners question on changing wheels

Sorry that this is a total noob question.

I have a totally standard Polo 9n3 GTI. I want to change from 16" monzas to 17" monzas or some BBS RX wheels.

What do I need to know about tyre size and are there any rubbing issues with the standard suspension?

Any advice would be appreciated.

3 things are important: wheel width, wheel offset (ET) and tyre dimension!

I have 8x17 ET 35 wheels with 205/40/17 tyres and it didn't rub when I was on standard suspension, when I had 35mm H&R springs and doesn't rub now when I'm on coils
