Problem is, there isn't anything that you could measuribly check in a short test drive. Things like the dsg "false neutral" issue and oil consumption are progressive things. If oyu're buying from a dealership, then you will still have most of the warranty available for any problems you do find.

Off subject but would be interested in your views once you swap to the GTI. When i looked at the reviews they nearly all said the Polo was a good car just not as good as the Clio 200. Be interesting to get your thoughts when you get one.

Yeah be good to hear your thoughts actually.

I test drove an alien green 200 before the gti I bought. Clio was very good when moving but just seemed like you had to thrash its nuts off evrywhere to get anything from it. However, the polo felt like lightning to the clio due to the engines twinchargers. As you will also find out, the polos interior and overall package are FAR superior and that's not biased at all, that's just the truth. The clio is a great Sunday afternoon thrash / track car, the polo is better at everything else. Although
many "reviewers" say that the clio is a great car to drive on a track (which it probably is) ....not all of us are lucky enough to live on a track.

I can honestly say I was in the same situation as you regarding these cars as I was very tempted by the clio and all the rave reviews etc etc. But to me it didn't live up to the hype and I made the right choice in the end.......Full stop.

I had a Clio 200 for a year. Yes, great on track, handles amazing blah de blah. But the engine is hard work and flat on a long straight.

Polo is a better car IMO. I absolutely love mine. Lacks a bit of character in the handling dept, but who cares. Better car all round.

Thanks for the info going to have a look at one at the weekend. As for the clio I agree as a track car its great but a day to day car its bad not very comfortable which you can live with but its just very bad on the mpg side both round town and a long run.

Just out of curiosity, what sort of MPG do you get from your Clio? I only get 32mpg from the Polo, is the Clio really a lot worse?

The Polo is a far superior car overall though, so I would still recommend changing to one :)

Really? I get 45mpg on a run and easily 35mpg avg everywhere else.

I used to average 22mpg in my Clio 200. Fuel thirsty little bugger it was.

I probably could get higher than 32 if I tried, but I'd never get above 40 as I never go on motorways in day to day driving really. All back country roads for me, which whilst great fun, aren't the best for fuel economy :)

I'm shocked at how low the Clio MPG is  Is it just because you have to rev it hard to get a lot of power from it?

No. It's because the engine is s**t. :) flat spots are also horrendous, as are the kangarooing you get on it at low rpm.

Still, it's good fun hooning it.
