Front end drone

Post by Thompatruck »

Hi guys,

Just joined as i've just got a 6n2 1 litre, I presently own and maintain 4 cars (and the wife's got one ;) ) live in Newcastle and can be regularly found on the end of a spanner ;) .......for my sins!

Everyone starts with a question and here's mine...... I've got a droning noise that seems to be coming from the N/S front, appears about 30mph and gets louder the faster you go, it is still present when I knock it out of gear and it's not the wheel bearing on that side as I changed it this weekend (Hmmm that was fun removing the driveshaft!) I don't think it's the drivers side bearing as I've jacked it up and run the wheel to about 60mph without any major noises.

Any ideas?

Not to argue but not all new bearings are good ones... Only other than that could be tyres or a cv joint in the shaft.... Havent noticed any cv grease about have you? Split the boot and knocked a cv joint out?

I know what you mean about the bearing but the sound and pitch of the noise hasn't altered since changing the bearing so I assume it's not that. If a CV had gone i'd expect the noise to change on cornering which it doesn't and there is no clicking either. Both CV's are clean with no breaks/leaks and the n/s driveshaft came out to get the hub off and looked alright. The only thing I could find was a little play in the gearbox end of the o/s driveshaft but surely there should be some?

The noise sounds like i need to change up a gear (when I don't) and as I say it's a rotational noise which continues when the clutch is depressed but it "sounds like" it's coming from where the gearbox is, nice and smooth through the gears though.

Do the driveshafts or more specifically the joint next to the gearbox on the offside driveshaft wear? And if so would this droning noise be a symptom?

Are the driveshaft's the same for all versions of the polo? will a 6n fit a 6n2 or are they specific?

Thanks :)
