MK5 1.4 TDI

Post by LogIK »

I'm very tempted by the MK5 Polo, as I think it is an extremely good looking car. I may be getting one in the near future, but I want a diesel to cope with my short journeys and for increased ecomomy.

I'm interested in the 1.4 TDI engine. Who has one and what do you think of it, as regards handling, comfort, power etc.

Thanks

Wierd. I e-mailed a mate of mine yesterday lunchtime about the 6n2 1.4TDi!! He wants to change from a Pug 205 DTurbo - I had a look on Auto Trader's website for him and made a few suggestions - can't lay my hands on the message text cos Hotmail doesn't keep them for me but here's the gist of it:

Prices: earlier models, eg. W-, X-reg, med-high mileage: £3.5-4.5k, later models, late Y- and 51-reg, lower mileage: £6.5-8k.

Handling/ride: pass  I've never driven one but presumably a bit softer than my GTi and probably just about as capable thru the twisty bits..?

Spec: go for an SE model to bag the most extras - 6-speaker stereo, GTi-style instrument binnacles, leather steering wheel, 14" alloys (Kylami I think), a/c and a few other bits 'n' bobs. Most models I've seen on Auto Trader are bright green, reflex/satin silver, diamond black or flash red, and theres a few surf blue ones around too!

Performance: again a pass cos I've never driven one, although it'll be far far better than the SDi model in terms of power and acceleration cos its PD technology :D

Thats just about the limit of my knowledge so if anyone else can help me out here then please do! And then I'll point my mate this way too...

Cheers

i've used my mums SE TDI PD for a while now.

Performance: as above, they really do shift for such a little car!

Handling: nothing special! expect loads of body roll! (but i guess people will be lowering/uprating the susp  )

Ive got a Mk5 Polo 1.4 TDi SE, its a W-Reg and has now done 37000 miles, it is only 75 BHP but certainly shifts in 3rd 4th & 5th, only had 110 mph out of it (which i know is enough in most cases) but i am thinking of getting it Superchipped though which takes it to 98BHP which should make one hell of a difference, either that or i buy a more expensive Tunning Box or Tunnit, these only add 16BHP though, anyway, get one bought, i did

click on sig link below for pics of my TDi

PS it has not been lowered, this was done on photoshop

my tdi is ace. very quick for a 1.4 diesel. everyone at work takes the mickey cause it diesel but its faster than a poxy saxo vtr. its not the power this car has 144lbft torque which is what makes the difference. you are going to win any standing starts but who cares about that.

on a commute which is about 14 miles (half and half 30mph and 60mph) it averages 550miles on 1 tank (something like 58mpg?). long motorway journeys dont seem to increase the mpg.

hadling will depend on the model, tyres and wheels. but it handles better than my avensis. :)
