Problem with car radio

Hi all, having an issue with my radio, a VDO Dayton. When it's on FM I can hardly hear it, even with the volume turned up to the max. Occasionally it works but never for long. I can listen to MW and the CD player at normal volume, just FM that isn't right.
Anyone heard of this issue before and any ideas on how to fix it? I was going to buy an MP3 transmitter but I'm guessing it won't work properly either as it connects to an FM frequency?

I found the FM signal rubbish with all of the aftermarket radios Ive tried.
