Can I swap the front and back wheels?

Post by George H »

Probably a really stupid question, but my front tyres are on about 3mm, the rears are approx. 6mm. Can I just swap them so they both run out at an even rate then I can change all 4 for a different type of tyre at the same time?

Would I need to get the tracking done or anything? Never really changed wheels before

I believe that's actually encouraged, or at least it used to be. It was in the manual for my old corsa :P If you do swap them make sure that both nearside and offside wheels stay on the same side, otherwise your tires will be on backwards.

Cheers, I'll have a look in the manual see if it says anything about it :)

Pretty sure it's still the done thing mate, I was just saying that to add some sort of reference to my outdated wheel-swapping knowledge (and for somebody to correct me if this was no longer the thing to do :P ) There's another thread on here with guys swapping over their front and back wheels to even out the tyre wear so it's all good :)

Yeah your probably doing it about the right time 3/4mm. Its prbably not "proper" practice but weve all done it.....i know i have anyway just to prolong the tyres usage. Might make the back end a little twitchy but you should be fine if your carefull.

Current practice is to put the better tyres on the back to discourage lift off over steer and promote under steer as its easier to deal with.
Nothing wrong with swapping the tyres though people have been doing it for years regardless what current practice is. I swapped mine when I took the winters off to put the fresher rear tyres on the front.

I swapped the wheels and it feels better.

Lift off oversteer is fun so I'll gladly be at risk from that rather than understeed
