They should clip in the gap around the window. and sit on the roof. On the 9N there are two amall arrows showing where the roof bars should sit at the top of the window. I have a 5 door 6R so i cant check if it is the same.

There's no way you'd have to drill holes to fit roof bars.

I think I have seen someone with them and I don't think you have to drill anything the clips just hook in between the glass and the car

if they're just for aesthetics then noooo! Roof racks only suit old VWs like the mk1 golfs

I have a pair of VW roof bars for the Polo. The owners manual shows where and how these should be fitted on the gutter - mine's a 4-door.

I have them for carry a surf board. They are very noisy and anyone who drives round with them on when not needed to carry stuff must be deaf or have a fantastic in-car stereo system...

I got the VW rack free off VW after an argument that I won :D
I use it for a Karrite roof box I got from the local autparts place in Oldham BMS think it was £80 and Karrite are Thules budget brand.
Theres holes for locating pins under the gutter over the door on one and I think the other bar just grips and uses whatever is attached to hold it all together.
No drilling at all, but fitting the rubber into the channels is a bit of a pig till you figure out how to do it.
The bars on there own noisy and hum after 45mph but not unbearable say for a weeks holiday but oddly quieter with the box fitted.
