Funny sound when engine cold 1.4 16v

Hiya
I have noticed that when the engine is cold i can hear a slight chatter coming from either the engine or exhaust. It only doe's it under load ie when in gear. Once it is warm don,t seem to be able to hear it. Just wondered if any other 1.4 16v owners had the same noise. I thought it maybe the engine ecu retarding the ignition until warm.

I'm pretty confident this affects Polo's with all engine types. When this happened to me I researched it in depth on various forums and I think it's something to do with the timing chain.

When I get home tonight i'll try to find where i've read about it!

I would say like a flut flut flut sound, abit like a subaru only tinier and not as burbly
